The move came one day after Janne Laukkanen suffered left a strained left knee in a 3-2 overtime loss at Colorado that will keep him sidelined up to six weeks.

Laukkanen was the third Pittsburgh defenseman to suffer a serious injury in four days. Bob Boughner is out up to two months after breaking his right hand at New Jersey on friday.

He registered 20 assists and 49 penalty minutes in 62 games for the Sharks last season and is expected to join Trebil and the Penguins for Thursday's contest at St. Louis.

Trebil played three games for Pittsburgh last season before leaving via free angency. He has four goals and four assists in 59 NHL games with the Islanders and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

The Islanders acquired a ninth round pick in 2001 for Trebil, who never played with the team. He played six games for Chicago of the International Hockey League.
