Originally, Violent J discussed starting up some kooky crazy side project he wanted to do with Shaggy called Zug Izland. It was pretty much going to be a Violent J fronted rock band.
Along the way, Violent J apparently realized that he had a talent for writing lyrics but....well.....sucked at singing. Mike P, the producer, became a band member and they dug up some of the best underground rockers Detroit had to offer, including an awesome lead vocalist named Syn.....and there ya go.
A few songs were released to the Internet early to hype the band and finally, in early 2003, Zug Izland's first album "Cracked Tiles" was released. Violent J had a big hand in background vocals and writing the lyrics, but Syn gave it a life of his own with his vocals.
Guido, the former bassist I believe, left the band due to health problems before the album was released. A brain tumor had been discovered and even though it was removed and he was declared healthy, problems persisted, forcing him to leave the band and focus on stayin' alive.
In late 2003, Zug Izland's keyboardist, Dan Miller, left the band due to personal family problems. No word has been released on whether or not he will be replaced. Currently, Zug has just put the finish touches on their upcoming album to be released soon.
