Ankylosaur scutes. These modified scales provided the bony armour to protect Ankylosaurs from predators such as the Tyrannosaurids.
Ankylosaur scutes vary in size and shape to create an intricate pattern of protection
(Teeth. actual size)
Ankylosaur teeth vary from .5 to 1.5 cm across. In an unworn state they are 'leaf-like'. The teeth were used for nipping, not chewing. Although fragile in appearance, these teeth were strong...often showing signs of great wear. Diet may have consisted of horsetails, conifer and ferns. Grass evolved after the Cretaceous.
