Jody the Fish

A bit of publicity for an early incarnation of the Esoterics, May, 1984.

"This photo was taken in my first car, a Plymouth Baracuda. The picture features Jody, Brad Caselden, and me. Brad is currently rumored to be in a band called the Murmurs that John Loken is interested in for his record company. I started this version of the Esoterics. Jody came up with the name. When I approached Jody (whom I didn't know at all, but who, I had heard, played bass) about starting a band, his response was, 'Yes, I play bass, and I am quite good.' 'Good enough for me,' I thought, 'You're hired!'

"This version of the Esoterics was largely a cover band that would play anywhere for gas money. We once played in a bathroom at a party! Jody was the lead singer in this version of the Esoterics. He was amazing in his memory of lots of songs, especially Beatles' tunes. All three of us were Police freaks. At band practice we would call out not Police songs to play, but sides of Police albums. We played just about every song on the Police's first three records, with Jody singing the high Sting vocals. Jody particularly liked playing 'Walking On The Moon' and the instrumental piece 'Regatta De Blanc.' We recorded an album of five songs with Ed acting as producer. Jody and I took it back to Saratoga High School on walkmans. What I recall most was people not believing it was us on the tape! A compliment, I guess."
