My Trip to Labuan (3/11 – 5/11/00)

“Mom, Jody’s car is here, I gotta go now! Bye!” I took the luggage and hopped into Jody’s car. I took a look at my watch, 12:45pm sharp. This Jody must be crazy, our flight would only leave at 2:10pm and she was here picking me up at 12:45pm! She was more excited than me. We went on to Kerr Li’s then Christine’s house.
We arrived at the airport at around 1:15pm and checked in. Jody announced that our flight has delayed half an hour. Half an hour, Jesus! That means our flight would only leave at 2:40pm. It was so terrible. We went upstairs and chit-chatted. Later we went into the departure room to wait for our plane. Not long after, we were already making our way to our plane, I couldn’t believe it. After we sat down on our own seat, we started to eat sweets just incase our ears hurt. I kept looking at the clock, 3:05pm! My God, I was wasting the whole afternoon waiting in the airport, stupid flight! Soon our plane took off and we were leaving for Labuan already.
“Lis, look, got tasik ladam oh..,” announced Kerr Li.
“Yea hoh…there look, that one looks like a “C” shape.”
I turned around and looked at Christine and Jody. Christine was sitting there quietly. She told me that she was afraid of height and was sick of plane. Whereas Jody, the greedy bug, was sitting there chewing and munching.
Suddenly, Kerr Li hit me on my hand, “Look we have arrived.” I looked down from the window, I can see the crystal clear sea, the cities, the buildings and the moving cars, they looked so much like the Lego I used to play while I was young. We landed not long after that. I felt so excited. The new airport was so beautiful and clean. I felt so ashamed of Miri’s airport by that time. They even have a tunnel. We walked continuosly until I saw a lot of people outside.
“I don’t see Szue May, do you see her?” asked Jody.
    “No,” I replied, looking around.
“I..think..I saw Szue May,” said Christine.
“Where..where..where?” as we asked while walking out the airport.
I finally see Szue May. She was dressed in black blouse and a short. Her mother was by her side. We greeted them and her mother gave us a warm greeting. Soon after we were already in Szue May’s house. Her house looked simple outside, not too big, not small either. However, she had a very beautiful and well-decorated garden and her living room was creatively decorated too. We left our luggage upstairs in Szue May’s brother’s room. I took out our gifts for May and her parents. They liked them very much.
I walked up to her TV and looked at the picture frames. “Aaron?”…I mumbled. Impossible. How couldn Aaron’s picture get into Szue May’s photo frame? I looked at it carefully this time…it was so cool, it really looked like Aaron but he wasn’t Aaron. He had earrings on his ear.
“That’s my brother,” Szue May annouced.
“Your brother? Whoa, so eng tau ah?” I asked back and continued, “he looks so much like Aaron lah.” My words caught Kerr Li and Christine’s attention.
    “Aaron?” they asked.
    “Yea! Look!”
    “Yea hoh!”
At about 5pm, we took a walk around May’s house and talked in her garden. I went in to shower early followed by Kerr Li. The other girls were watching MTV downstairs. At about 7pm, our dinner was ready. Spaghetti! It was really delicious and I enjoyed it. After our dinner, we did what girls usually did – chit chat! We talked about almost everything ranging from girls to guys; from guys to clothes; from clothes to movies and music in Szue May’s room.
    “Let’s phone someone,” I suggested.
    “Who?” asked Christine.
“How about Winston? I miss him and want to talk to him,” said May.
So we phoned him for about 15 minutes, using my handphone. Then, I looked at my watch… “10:30pm”…what to do now?
“Still early hoh? Why don’t you phone Aaron leh?” teased Jody.
“Ilissa must be missing Aaron now,” continued Christine.
“No, don’t disturb him, he might be asleep now. It’s late,” I said. Blushing, looking for excuse not to phone Aaron.
“No lah, he cannot be asleep now. He haven’t walk his dog yet leh,” demanded Jody. This time, I have no excuse but to phone. Aaron and I chatted for about 8 minutes.
“Eik..eik…someone is so happy now,” teased Jody as I hung up with Aaron.
We went downstairs later to have some fruits in the middle of the night. We then continued to talk again and even scared ourselves by talking about horror movies like <The Blair Witch Project> and ran upstairs screaming right sharp at 12am. We closed ourselves in Szue May’s room and continue talking again, this time about our classmates. Kerr Li was already deep in her sleep in another room. We talked and talked until 2am, I suggested that we should go to bed as we would go shopping whole day the next day. They all agreed. Jody and I set our own handphone to wake us up at 8am the next morning.
In our room, I was sleeping next to Christine. We both couldn’t sleep and talked again. Suddenly, I heard a car outside. I woke up and looked. A car was stopping at next door’s gate.
“2am in the middle of the night…what is this people doing so late!” I mumbled to Christine. I lied down again, ignoring those people. Not long after that, we heard something from the garden again.
“Someone is mowing the grass..” said Christine.
“In the middle of the night?” I asked and tried to listen carefully. “No, I think there’s someone digging out ‘something’ in the garden.” I continued.
“Lissa…don’t scare me!” Christine said, raising her voice.
    “Really bah..”
We stopped for a while and I was already falling asleep. Then, a sound woke me up again. It sounded as if someone is cutting the tree…yikes! I held the blanket up to my head and slept.
