I met Shiew Shya in church when we
were just 9-year-olds. Not suprisingly, we clicked. Every week, we would
wait for each other and sit together during service. We often got up to
mischief; once, we were chit-chatting as usual when the speaker was preaching
when we got caought. Well not exactly 'we', cuz I got away with it. The
teacher in charge of the kids had only spotted Shya talking and had pinched
her ears!
Our friendship continued in Primary
4 when we were put in the same class. On the last day of school, we exchanged
gifts and promised to be best friends.
The following year, I remember there
was some sort of commotion against Shya, and she was deserted for quite
some time. I was sad to see her alone and I wanted to stick with her, but
didn't as I feared what my other friends would say. I didn't even know
what the fuss was all about; I only knew the horrid rumours were started
by my other close friend.
For the next few years, we got closer
with other friends in our class. I usually stuck with the scouts, and she
would be with the bookworms (@nerds). However, we still remained good friends.
During the first year in secondary
school, both of us quarrelled and laughed over the silliest things. During
Moral Education, we would sit together and chat about anything and everything
ranging from guys to fashion to pets to underwear! Also, during Home Ecomonics
class, she would usually ask me to help carry her stuff to the workshop.
(I.e.: container, eggs, etc.) "Kekok bahh..." On one occassion after class,
I insisted that she carry our stuff back. She refused, and I was just as
stubborn, so we left our cookies and containers on the balcony and walked
all the way back to the classroom, glancing at each other but too proud
to be the first to turn back. Only when we arrived at the classroom did
we realize how silly we had been, and we had to rush back to get them before
the teacher did.
Whenever I had problems with my work
or anything at all, Shiew Shya would always be there to offer me help and
advice. I truly appreaciate having her for my friend.
