We docked in St. Thomas at 8:00 am and immediately boarded our open air tour shuttle bus.
The driver was a "yeh man, rasta man" and narrated our drive to the top of the mountain to Skyline Drive for panoramic views of the bay. It was magnifient, just gorgeous. The blue waters, green hilly countrysides dotted with homes.
As we circled the small island and worked our way back down the hills, we stopped at the top of a small hill and began our walking tour at Blackbeards castle. It is now a posh hotel overlooking the bay. We strolled around the gardens and buildings and then began the descent down the 99 steps to town. An old home perched on the side of the hill called Haagensen House was turned into a local museum and restored to it's original condition from the 1820s. It was furnished with typical period furnishings, accessories and was very interesting and beautiful. The steps down the hill included more gardens, old homes and historic sites. At the bottom was the famed St. Thomas shopping areas. We walked down the narrow streets jam packed with shoppers. There were mostly jewelry and t-shirt shops. We ended up buying nothing and chose to walk the 3 miles along the beach back to ship. There were also small shopping malls near the docks, so we walked around those, and enjoyed the more laid back, less crowded stores. We enjoyed St. Thomas and would like to see more of the white sand beaches and surrounding quaint islands of St. John and St. Croix.
The ship sailed at 6pm. Our last night on board was a grand, formal, farewell, gala dinner with visits from the captain and executive chef. For dessert, the waiters paraded around the darkened room with their baked alaska. A perfect ending to a wonderful cruise!!
