His Birth Story

Roy Hugh Schram, called Hugh by all, has an intersting story about when he was born. When his mother was pregnangt with his she had to have one of her orvaries removed. So she went to the hospital and had the operation. After the operation she found out that her doctor had asked if other doctors could also watch the operation. Remember this was in 1922 or 1923 and an operation of this kind was unusual. Grandpa Roy said yes and my Grandmother found out I'm sure she hit the roof.

Therefore, when it came time for her baby to be born, even thought it was imperative that she be in the hospital for the deliver, she refused. I can just hear her argue with Grandpa Roy and the doctor about it. She was a very studbborn lady. The compromise was that Hugh would be born in a house near the hospital. The doctor and his nurse both were in attendance incase there was trouble. There was not any. This small change in georgraphy caused problems for my dad when we planned a trip to Europe in the 60's The was no birth cretificate made by the doctor. There would have been if he had been born in the hospital. My dad found the attending nurse who was still alive and she signed his papers so he ccould get a birth certificcate.

I have ofter wondered if Grandma Leah's operation was ever written up in the medicical journals. I am sure that Leah would have been very up set if was. I sure she didn't know because she never mentioned it to me. I think she would have if it was.

Hugh's Kindergarter Career

Hugh came home from his first day of school with the chicken pox. His mother blamed the school for giving him the chicken
pox so she didn't send him back to school once he got well. Hugh though that maybe the real reason was his mother didn't want to give him up right then.
