Life on the Farm circa 1864 The Children
When Hugh was about 10 years old his father joined the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. He was the second oldest or Peter's and Catharine's children and the oldest boy. So most of the farming chores fell upon his shoulders. This must have been a very anxious time for the whole family. Peter didn't come home until the middle of 1866.

The New House and Barn
Hugh built a house and a barn on the land that his parents had settled on in around 1854. They still stand today on Bricker Road. The log cabin that Peter built remains there, too. However, you would never know that it is a log cabin. Siding has been put over the logs and an addition has been added on.
