Travis: The Invisible Band Release date: 06.16.01 Epic Records Sometimes you just don't need a DJ or samples to make a good record. For you kids out there, I know that's hard to imagine. A life without DJs and samples is, well, like a life without Limp Bizkit. And a life without Limp Bizkit is like a life without TRL. And a life without TRL is ...well, you get the picture. The Invisible Band, isn't just the title of Travis's latest LP, it's a reality...at least for them. These four young Scottish lads, who just barely missed the Oasis boat, are trying to break in the US amidst teen pop and fake rock. As far as America's concerned, they are invisible. But this album is worth much more than the sixes and sevens other reviewers have dished out. The first track alone, Sing, is worth an eight. And behind it, comes sweet and soulful melodies reminisent of the Beatles "Blackbird" or Van Morrison's "And it Stoned Me". And, as on their previous album The Man Who, the hidden tracks are as good, if not better then the listed songs. If I had to put all my faith in one band, in the fight against boy bands and girl...whatever it is....Travis is now and forever will be, my choice. -LB

Gorillaz: Gorillaz Release Date: 06.25.01 Virgin/Parlophone The only reason that this magnificent album did not recieve a ten, is because the cover looks like a G.I. Joe jeep I once had...so I thought that it was only right. Despite the references to my adolecent toys, Gorillaz is an amazing album. It is a breakthrough in terms of changing the way you look at music genres because...it has no specific genre. When you hear the label "Rap/Rock" you automatically think Kid Rock or Limp Bizkit. I had the good fourtune of buying this album before I heard people label it that way. Don't be fooled, this is NOT commercialized rap mixed with commercialized rock. The Gorillaz mean business, and the talent that consumes this record, from both sides is legit. The brains behind the Gorillaz operation are Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Dan The Automator (Handsome Boy Modeling School) with visuals provided by cartoonist Jamie Hewlett. With assistance from some of music's finest talent, Del The Funky Homosapien and the Tom Tom Club's Tina Weymouth, just to name a couple, Gorillaz is a collaberation like no other. -LB

Flickerstick: Welcoming Home The Astronauts Re-Release Date: July 24,2001 BPL Records I still think this one has to grow on me. If you saw Bands on the Run, you couldn't help siding with these guys over the crap that they were up against. And I have to admit, I had a little crush on Cory...but what girl didn't? Instead of Flickerstick how about...Band of Dogs or We'll Flickerstick Our Dick In Anything. But aside from their bad behavior, they are really good live (or so it seems on television). So why not buy the album? 1. The lyrics are so-so. "I'd like to buy the world a coke"....I'd like to buy these guys a writing coach and then I'd like to teach the world to sing. 2. Through no fault of their own, (this album was released last year) two of thier best songs, "Smile" and "Execution By Christmas Lights," aren't even on it. 3. They kinda have the 311 syndrome...the songs sound relatively the same. If you REALLY liked them buy it, it's not that bad..."Beautiful" is an awesome song and "Sorry...Wrong Trajectory" is good as well. But I'd wait until it's re-relesed again with the two songs that are missing. -LB
