Life Eternal

The chapel mural at St. Claire of Assisi, Vaughn, Ontario

Carlos Nunes (L) and Julio Razquin

Throught nearly six weeks, I had the great pleasure (and privilige) of assisting Carlos Nunes in the painting of the above mural.

Carlos began designs for the mural in 1999, and its completion date was June 6, 2003.

We used tempera grassa as the main medium, a centuries old traditional paint, which we manufactured on-site. As the finalizing touch, oil paints were used.

The mural is a perfect example of the marriage of traditional (classical) concepts and mediums with a more contemporary subject matter. The figures on the left portraying those who are no longer with us, and the figures on the right symbolizing the cultural diversity and devotion of the present-day members of the congregation.

Artistically, the piece is yet another wonderful example of Carlos' use of movement, shapes, values and temperatures. This has been, by far, one of the most rewarding artistic experiences for me.
