I found this in the book The World Of Ballet by Judy Tatchell
Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993) was pupil at the Leningrad Choreographic School and made his debut with the Kirov Ballet. In 1961, he left Russia to join The Royal Ballet, where he was the leading male dancer of the 1960s and 70s. From 1983 until 1991, he was Director of the Paris Opera.
