OUR BURR FAMILY
Generation 1
|
The above list of children was obtained from Philip Smith’s Rootsweb website. The data from the Burr Family genealogy is entirely different, omitting the name/s of any spouse, and the list of children is different and differently put together, i.e.,:
|
JEHU BURR was born in 1687. He married (1) Hannah, about 1710; and (2) Sarah, about 1721.*
* The Burr Family genealogy lists only one marriage, that to Sarah (-). And mentions only children named in his will (dated 28 Sep 1757). In his will he gave the use of his property to his wife, Sarah, so long as she remained his widow. To his son, Jehu Burr, he gave a certain tract of land lying on the west side of the Saugatuck River, together with his grist mill. To his son, Daniel, he gave his hill lot; to his daughter, Comfort, he gave £20; and to his daughter, Prudence, £15; and the rest of his estate to his remaining daughters, except a piece of land lying near the parsonage long lot, which he gave to his son-in-law, Ebenezer Gilbert, and Elnathan Griffith. Daughters Sarah, Mary, and Abigail died before their father did, leaving heirs.

Jehu Burr appears early on the Redding Congregational Church Records, firstly, on 24 December 1738, when he and his wife were admitted to full communion on the recommendation of Rev. Mr. Goodsell.
On 29 December 1748, he appears as moderator of a parish meeting, called to “consider the propriety of building a new meeting house,” and was appointed an agent to “prepare a memorial to the next County Court, for a committee to pick out a place for the building.”
Sarah Burr, b. 21 Jan 1711/12, rec. at Newtown, Fairfield Co CT. She d. before 1757.
Mary Burr, b. 15 Jun 1713, rec. at Newtown, Fairfield Co CT. She d. before 1757.
Daniel Burr, b. about 1715 in CT. He mar. at Redding, Fairfield Co CT on 22 Dec 1737, Abigail Sherwood. She was b. 28 Dec 1714 in Stratford, Fairfield Co CT. They had one son, Silas Burr, bapt. 8 Dec 1739 at Greenwood CT.
Abigail Burr, b. about 1718 in CT. She mar. at Stratford, Fairfield Co CT, Samuel Sherwood, the marriage rec. on 20 Jan 1715/16. She d. before 1757.
Hannah Burr, bapt. 25 Aug 1723 in CT.
Hester Burr, b. 11 Apr 1725, in CT. She mar. about 1745, Martin Keeler.
Katherine Burr, bapt. 17 Apr 1727 at Redding, Fairfield Co CT. She mar. on 20 Aug 1745 at Redding, Benjamin Maker [Meeker] (b. about 1720) at the Congregational Church by Mr. Read. They had seven children, all in Fairfield, Fairfield Co CT. Descendants named Meeker.
PATIENCE BURR. She married Elnathan Griffin on 26 Nov 1750.
Prudence Burr, bapt. 12 Jan 1731/32 in CT. She mar. in CT on 12 May 1756, Ebenezer Gilbert (b. 31 Mar 1724, rec. at Fairfield, Fairfield Co CT). She joined the Easton Church in CT on 4 Sep 1764.
Comfort Burr, bapt. 12 Jan 1731/32 in CT. She mar. 11 Jan 1774, at Redding, Fairfield Co CT, Joseph Truesdale.
Jehu Burr Jr., bapt. 23 Aug 1734 in CT. On 22 Nov 1755, he mar. Sarah Griffin in the Congregational Church at Redding, the Rev. Nathaniel Bartlett officiating. She was the dtr. of John Griffin & Sarah Nash (b. 20 Mar 1712 in CT), possibly of a different family.
This John Griffin doesn’t seem to be tied in to our Griffins. Jehu and Sarah Burr’s children were: (1) Ephaim Burr (bapt. 22 Aug 1756 at Redding CT), and (2) Abigail Burr (bapt. 2 July 1758 at Redding CT).
The above list of children was obtained from Philip Smith’s Rootsweb website. The data from the Burr Family genealogy is entirely different (and I believe incomplete). It lists Sarah (-) as the only wife, and the list of children is different and differently put together, i.e.,:
The above list omits Patience Burr, who was the wife of Elnathan Griffin. This seems entirely odd, as the Burr Family genealogy does mention Jehu’s will as giving a piece of land to his son-in-law, Elnathan Griffin, but then doesn’t mention to which of Jehu’s children Elnathan was married!
|
PATIENCE BURR was baptized on 9 March 1728/29 in Connecticut.
Patience married, in Connecticut, on 26 November 1750, ELNATHAN GRIFFIN.
Elnathan Griffin was born 9 February 1724/25 at Rochester, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. They had 8 children. He died about 1795.
