The above topic was chosen mainly due to personal interest. Some of my friends are happily married, some not so happily married, some cohabiting to ‘test’ their compatibility, and others cohabiting with no intention of getting married. I am interested in the motivation behind their choice of living pattern, and if the social circumstances in Hong Kong have any influence on their lifestyles and quality of their relationship.

The topic of marriage and cohabitation has been widely researched and written on. Therefore, there is a lot of expert opinion that I will be able to draw my references from. Yet at the same time, our society and its people are ever changing. I hope that my research paper on marriage and cohabitation in Hong Kong at this point of time will make the research that has been done in this area more up-to-date.
