"Say Honey, what movie should we go see tonight?" "How about that 'Fahrenheit' flick?

I hear Hezbollah gave it two big thumbs up."

---

Seems like Michael Moore's new film 'Fahrenheit 9/11/' is stirring up controversy just like Gibson's 'Passion of Christ'

---

First, a Web site called MoveAmericaForward.org, backed by the GOP PR firm Russo Marsh & Rogers,  stepped forward with a campaign intended to pressure theaters not to book the film

A DNS check reveals that the site is being run by a PR firm out of San Francisco

GOP PR Firm Attempts to Censor Michael Moore's New Film

---

The MoveAmericaForward web site then entered the realm of ridiculous and something resembling parody as they sent out a bulletin headlined, "Terrorist Group Hezbollah Endorses Michael Moore Film: Offers to Help Promote 'Fahrenheit 9/11/."'

Sounds ridiculous doesn't it?

About that State Department report on terrorism that was so encouraging...

In late April, the State Department released a report insisting that international terrorist attacks had dropped in 2003 to historic lows, which Republicans and Bush's conservative allies pointed to as proof that the president's war on terror was working wonders.

There was just one problem with the report: it was completely wrong.

Here's an e-mail I recieved the other day....

June 2, 2004

Dear Ms. Valentine:

Thank you for contacting me about our military readiness
and the possibility of reinstating the draft.

The foremost responsibility of the Federal government is to
provide for our national defense, and that is an obligation I take
very seriously.  As the horrible terrorist attacks of September 11,
2001
, and the subsequent operations in Afghanistan and the Middle
East
make very clear, the need for the military personnel,
equipment, and weapons systems necessary to defend our nation
still remains strong.  We must never forget that the world is a
volatile place and that significant dangers are always present.

As you may know, the draft ended on July 1, 1973.  Since
then, the United States has relied on volunteers to fill the ranks of
the military.  The Department of Defense and other agencies have
been diligent in their efforts to maintain our national security
within the constraints of the all-volunteer system.  Those who
choose to serve our nation in the armed forces exemplify our most
treasured values, enduring the unique burdens of military life out
of a sense of duty and love for our great country.  Even though
there is a national Selective Service System in place, there are no
plans at this time to re-institute conscription.

On January 7, 2003, S. 89, the "Universal National Service
Act of 2003," was introduced in the
United States Senate.  This
legislation would include women in the selective service and
reopen the draft; however it is still being reviewed in the Senate
Armed Services Committee, of which I am a member.

Since the War on Terror has put specific demands on our
Armed Forces, the Army has implemented two programs of
selective recruiting that have sometimes been confused as a form
of the draft.  However both of these programs continue to be
volunteer programs; they do not force any one to serve who does
not wish to do so.  The first, which was implemented by the Army
in August 2003, recruits Arabic speakers directly into the
Individual Ready Reserve.  The second is a small pilot program
that recruits people with a unique set of skills that are difficult to
maintain on active duty.  These volunteers work on the Defense
Wireless Service Initiative as highly skilled wireless engineers and
spectrum managers to better manage the Army's increased use and
reliance on this type of technology.

I appreciate hearing from you.  Should legislation regarding
this issue come to the Senate floor I will keep your views in mind.
If I can be of further assistance please do not hesitate to contact
me.

Sincerely,

Saxby Chambliss
United States Senate
