Winter in Oulu

Winter in Oulu is beautiful (if often dark, cold, and wet). When the snow falls, it reflects what little light remains during the day, so even the night is not pitch dark. Winter is usually the best time to see Northern Lights on a clear night. Even if there are no spectacular displays, the moon and the stars can be just as impressive, viewed in the cold northern sky.
The university is covered in snow. Inside, students and professors hang heavy coats, umbrellas, and even snow boots on communal coat racks. Nothing is ever stolen.
Night has fallen by 3:00 in the afternoon. Working "from dawn until dusk" takes on a new meaning, and that's actually about as much as any of us want to work in these last days of our semester in Oulu.
The Center is beautiful in the late afternoon snow shower as the people of Oulu hurry through the walking district, Christmas shopping or running errands.
The Ball has been taken away for the winter so that the water in the fountain will not freeze solid around it and crush it to oblivion.
"Hauskaa Joulua" is Merry Christmas in Finnish. I had lots of fun buying Finnish Christmas cards in bulk.
