A British doctor enlists in the army during the Napoleonic wars and leaves two sisters, who are secretly in love with him, crushed because he claims he has no sweetheart to leave behind. He comes back 10 years later to find them turned into "old maid" school teachers. One of the sisters cooks up a scheme to win him back by pretending she is her niece. How long can she keep up her double act without being caught by the doctor, as well as by the gossipy old ladies on the street?
