// goals for 2006.savings

o I’m incredibly anal about my money. I have my total assets divided into “funds” within my checking account—they provide my allotted spending for CDs, DVDs, gas, groceries and everything else.

o Now that I have a decently well-paying job, I intend to bulk up my savings account as much as possible. This is a fairly simple one, so I really don’t have to say anymore.

o By December 31, 2006, I will have added at the very least $10,000 to my savings account.

Current amount: $4600. The Japan trip has passed as an obstacle, but the apartment search is very much alive. Brian and I are no longer a 'we,' so I must begin getting myself out of here (though we're getting along really well, so there's no die-hard rush). A major blow is going to come when I get my own car insurance set up, as it will then be set on a car in a Chicago ZIP code on a still under-25 driver. Recipe for major expense.

Still, at $4600 on day 108, I'm outrunning this goal by about $1600. Even if there is a bit of a drain coming, I am well prepared. Besides, that's a worthwhile drain, as opposed to failing this goal because of too many nights out and a closet-full of clothes.

Current amount: $3400. The first obstacle might have just been set in the path of this goal. As you can see, it's still going strong; it is the 72nd day of the, so on average I need only have saved $2000 at this point. However, I've just been given the option of taking a 9-day trip to Japan next April, which will run me in the range of $4000. Granted, most of the expense would come about in 2007, but a good deal of the planning costs--plane tickets and such, would run on this year's tab. If I keep saving at this rate, though, I'll have saved over $17,000 by the end of the year, which would put me way over the necessary expense. However, these totals might also be affected by my impending search for a new apartment; I know I said we're likely to stay here, but now it's more and more likely that we're not going to be a 'we' much longer. Lots of x-factors up on this one at the moment.

Current amount: $2300. It turns out that this one is going to be easier than I thought. Apparently I don't spend much money, so even though $10,000 is over one-third of my annual income, I should have no problem meeting the standard. Of course, this bars any unforseen events that pull some of my savings out of their retirement to my bank account.
