// goals for 2006.watch_movies

o I have a long list of movies I want to watch. Every time someone recommends a picture or I see a decent-looking preview on another movie, I write it down and it gets added to the following list. The problem is I really only rent movies when I’m depressed and need to watch chick-flick type things.

o So, this year, I intend to make a dent in this list. Right now most of them are Katharine Hepburn and/or Spencer Tracy flicks as I completely adore the two of them. I finally copied both of their lists of work from IMDB and added them in their entirety. The rest of them are absolutely random inclinations as far as I remember—friend and coworker recommendations and the like.

o To accomplish this goal I will watch any thirty of the following (the list is clumped--I don't feel like formatting right now) by December 31, 2006, and hopefully be the better for most of them.

04.10.06
Update: Five movies. I should have watched eight by now. Yet another goal I'm failing. I really would like to have some precedent so I could tell whether I'm failing because I'm lazy or because the goals are to much to expect from myself in one year.

04.03.06
Real Women Have Curves: This was my chick flick for one of Brian's gaming nights. I pretty much say 'meh.' Either the actors themselves were bad, or the direction was bad, because the end result was the complete discomfort of the actors with their characters. I was severely aware the entire movie that they were, in fact, acting, which is just not good. The message was nice for me in my current state, though; the whole 'love yourself for who you are' is always a good thing to hear, especially as a girl in a failing relationship. Worth watching [for me] but definitely not even close to a favorite and I have no intention of ever seeing it again.

03.25.06
Attack The Gas Station: Another impromptu viewing, another weekend in Edwardsville. This movie is absolutely ridiculous but entirely entertaining. It's another Korean movie, this time about four randomly bored guys who rob gas stations for the hell of it. One of the stations, though, has no money, so they just end up taking it over and pumping gas for the money. Much fighting and slapstick and heartbreak ensue. I would heartily recommend it for a drunken night with easily amused friends.

03.07.06
Update: This one has moved entirely into the category of failing. I have only watched three legitimate movies this year (movies that I haven't already seen before) while I should have seen six at this point. I would promise to do better in the future, but in light of my tastes at this point, I doubt this goal ranks high on the priority list--given the choice, I tend to spend time focusing on the reading and other such goals. Meh. Can't say I'll be too sad about failing to force myself to watch movies.

02.11.06
Old Boy: This was a totally impromptu viewing. I jumped to Hillsboro to get away for a bit, and Saturday night Matt, Sarah, Noe and I got together for movie and lots of drinking (well, at least for me and Matt). We were going to watch random, brainless movies (like Zoolander), but Noe and Sarah both decided that Matt and I had to see this one instead.

It was well worth the extra brain power. It's a Korean suspense/action film with an amazingly cool storyline; I would heartily recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind subtitle-reading.

02.07.06
Update: By today I should have watched three of the movies on my list. I have only watched two, so I'm a bit behind, but one isn't really bothering me all that much, considering I've had the most busy set of weekends the past couple.

01.31.06
The Motorcycle Diaries: Awesome movie. This has been on my list since someone at the Daily Illini recommended it to me, but the weekend before watching it, Brian bought a biography on Che Guevara. So, I figured this would be a good chance to conquer one of my resolution movies and give him an in to his next read. It was well worth it, an amazing movie and I heartily recommend it to anyone who isn't above watching subtitled flicks to get their entertainment (I know there's often a prejudice against reading while watching a movie).

01.30.06
Igby Goes Down: Eh. It was okay. I watched this because (a) I had rented it once before based on the cover and never did have time to watch it and (b) it came on recommendation from a former coworker (it was on his Facebook site), so I nabbed it again. It was amusing enough, but I was only half watching it while I cleaned the kitchen. I have the feeling that if I had paid full attention, it would have been infuriatingly annoying as far as movies go.
