// goals for 2006.design

o My primary career-related love is publication design. However, the work I’m doing now isn’t really involved so much with the creative design aspect, but rather the copyediting and assembly aspects of publishing. But for over two years I performed nightly page design duties at the Daily Illini, the college newspaper for the University of Illinois, and actually managed to attach my name to two awards for front-page design from a state press association competition (and crossing my fingers for a third from my senior year’s work). I also took a class in graphic design during which I learned nothing and yet created some massive awesomeness for my portfolio.

o As with my web, calculus and language skills, I don’t want my design skills to atrophy. I figure the best way to motivate myself to do this is to take up some freelance design work. I mean, there has to be some market around here for designing proofs for invitations, business cards, etc., for the not-so-monetarily inclined. This one most likely will not be accomplished, other than possibly doing some minor business card or flyer work for my mom or Brian (I got to make the flu shot flyer for the Arlington Heights & Golf Walgreen’s—ooooh, that’s the big time). But, regardless, anything that keeps me brushed up on my print product abilities would be welcome.

o So, by December 31, 2006, I will have nabbed myself some freelance design work.
