Mike Clark's 99 UDC Course Comments

Sumerland Hills:

SH had a pretty good plot. The writing was well done and the holes were put into place decently. This course had a few great holes but lacked the solid holes that make a spectacular course. I didn't run accross any unplayable greens, or large cliffs, but the holes did have plenty of elevation changes for varience throughout the course. At no time while playing this course did I become boared with the same type of hole time after time. Not enough time was spent on this course, otherwise it could have been great. Still it was a good course, and is fun to play.

Providence Mountains:

I was the first to view this course, and when I did I was amazed. I tried to explain to a few other JNSE designers that this wasn't a simple Muzny design (which by the way are very good). This course had a bit more scenery and was unique. It was a great desert course that featured plenty of water and tons of scenery. The course still remained a classic, playable, realistic Muzny design though. The more one plays this course, the more he will like it. I feel this course should have been a bit closer to Marsh Pointe West in the voting, but it did place very well, and deservingly so.

The Barrowlands:

Not a great course by any means, but a course that forces a ton of different shots, and a course that is unique. It featured Paul Warrens style, with a bit too much creativity. If the course would have been hevily edited it could have done very well. It would also flow a lot better with the background that the course will later be released with.

Western Highlands:

In my opinion the most underated course in the contest. By no means should this course have won, but it was pretty solid. It was a classic layout that carried the barrian theme throughout the course very well. It was a bit of a choppy course because 3 designers did it, but it still had a ton of solid holes. All in all I feel this course was pretty good, but in the contest it placed poorly due to one judges dislike of the course.

River Run:

A very good course that at first reminded me of a Muzny design. It featured 18 realistic holes that look solid. The course as a whole had a realistic feel, but it lacked creativity. All the holes seemed repititous. A great Joel Ferchoff design though. A spectacular pallette aided Joel's course tremendously.

Marsh Pointe West:

Kyle Bowen showed his increase in talent as he used advanced jnse skills on this course. It was not as flat or dull as far as scenery is concerned, as Longston Pines was. It features a spectacular hole. #9, which forces 2 shots over the marsh. A great course that deserved the win. The only problem with the course is that in no way did the course flow with the background. It will deffinately improve with a new background.
