Joel's 99 UDC Course Comments

PROVIDENCE MOUNTAINS by Randy Muzny

-I loved the colour that Randy chose for the sand. -On the par 3 4th, I don't think that the red water hazard stick should be put in front of the flag as I hit that with my tee shot and it cost me yards. I do like the idea of having the red sticks however. It is a nice touch. -Nice looking tee shot on 7. -I didn't like some of the large hills in the sand. They didn't come out that well. -There were a few holes where the gold tee objects could be seen when playing from the gold tees. So there were two sets of gold tees seen. -The dry river bed on 15 made for a very nice looking second shot. -I liked the approach on 17. -Randy did a very good job on making the course flow well with the background. He did the best job of all the courses in this contest.

THE BARROWLANDS by Paul Warren/Ben Wicks

-I liked the story behind the course a lot. -I thought that the second green was too wild. The back pin position is almost impossible with the bunker and the steep drop behind it. -Great tee shot on number 5. That tree on the left look very good. -Very scenic tee shot on 12. -Water on the back improved the scenery. -I didn't like the fact that the green on 16 was not visible from the fairway. -Did a good job at making this a frustartingly tough course.

WESTERN HIGHLANDS by Mike Clark, Randy Muzny, Pete Broad

-I liked the waste bunker on the 6th hole. -Good tee shot on the 7th hole. -Shouldn't have left "needs to be heavily edited still" in the quote for the 8th hole!! -I didn't like the tree blocking the front left pin position on #14. -On some of Randy and Pete's holes, you could see the gold tee obs when playing from the gold tee. -One thing that I didn't like was that the three groups of holes done by the three different designers didn't blend together that well. I could kind of tell that each section was done by a different designer. -I have to admit, I didn't really like this course. It was kind of boring as there was very little good scenery and very few risk/reward situtations.

MARSHE POINTE WEST by Kyle Bowen

-Good tee shot on #3. -I really like the tall tree objects that were used. They looked great. -I liked the idea of putting the HDCP on the actual overhead of each hole. I don't think that you should have put any height to them. On one hole when I was on the green, I could see the HDCP thing raised up and it looked really bad. -I loved the 9th hole, everything about it. By far the best hole on the course. -I encountered a centerline problem on the 10th, which is a par 3!! -I didn't like the approach to 17. The hills didn't look good and anything short might end up in an unplayable lie. -Great attention to detail!! Even the little wooden things with the hole map had the MPW initials on them. Wow! -I think that the Marsh feel could have been done a bit better with the pallette. Water could have been darker and more greenish to get a better feel for marsh. Good choice of water objects however. -Overall, an excellent effort from Kyle. Great work Kyle!!

SUMMERLAND HILLS by Mike Clark/Kyle Bowen

-I like the opening hole here a lot. It is a very challenging tee shot, but if you hit the fairway, birdie is easy and eagle is a possibility. -I aced hole #2 on my second play-through (means nothing to judging, I'd just thought I'd mention it). -Good tough and scenic tee shot on #4 although the large wall on the left looked pretty bad. -I didn't like the 7th hole. The scenery would have been great if you didn't have such a large uphill shot to the green. -I didn't like those stone sides on the waterfall. They looked kind of stupid. 10th tee shot looked great even with those. -Risk/reward on 13 wasn't that great. The right fairway is almost impossible to hit, so almost all players will play safe. -There were a few flat greens on the course. Add some slope and the course becomes even tougher.
