Hole #15 at Summer's End

  • Designer: Mike Clark and Kyle Bowen
  • Par: 5
  • Length: 505 yards

I don't know if you would call this a "risk-reward" hole, because there isn't a lot of risk, but it is what I would call a tricky hole. It is a par 5, and I think that the majority of players will get a birdie here, with a few making eagles and pars. But, if you're really careless, then double bogey is a possibility.

The place where carelessness can kill you is off the tee. First off, the tee shot is quite demanding, especially if you're not good at hitting a fade. You absolutely have to fade the ball on this hole, to get any kind of distance on the tee shot. If you fade it correctly, a 290 yard drive is a possiblity. But, in playing for a fade, you may aim just a little too far left. Just a little too far left, and your ball can hit that tree on the left, and fall into the heavy rough, with the shot going a distance of only 50 yards. From here, you'll do well to make par, and bogey and double bogey is a better possibility.

But, if you're careful off the tee, and find the fairway, chances are you can have a good go at the green in two. The approach will probably be a 3-wood. The tricky part about it is that you're hitting the ball severly downhill. The makes judging distance, especially with a wood, extremely difficult. Long is bad on this hole, and short will find the bunker that covers much of the front right part of the green. If you hit the tiny green, however, it is a fairly flat and easy green to putt on, and the chance at eagle is excellent. Even if you miss the green, birdie can still be made if you hit a good pitch, or bunker shot. On this hole, par feels like a bogey.

All in all, this is a great hole, even though getting an under par score on it is usually not a problem. The tricky downhill second shot, as well as the great placement of the tree to the left of the tee makes this an outstanding hole. 1
