Hole #13 at Raptor Run

  • Designer: Chase Whiddon
  • Par: 5
  • Length: 480 yards

This is a great strategy hole because it forces good shotmaking as well as a huge decision to make. The water on the hole is the main feature on it. It is about 125 yards wide, and you have to carry it to get to the green. But what it really forces you to do is make a huge decision after your tee shot.

The tee shot is not all that difficult to hit the fairway, but if you hook it, you could be in the water. You MUST hit the fairway on this hole, and extra distance is a great bonus. The fun on this hole begins after the tee shot. Depending on pin position and your distance, you could have anything from 235 to 170 to the pin. From about 170 to 200, the decision is obvious to go for the pin, but the shot is still a difficult one.

The difficult decision is if you're left with about 205-235 to the green. With all the water in front of you, the decision that would appear to be the best is to lay-up. But, if you lay-up, you can only go about 50-80 yards further up the fairway, which in my mind, is almost of a waste of a shot. Besides, after that, you are still going to have a 5 or 6 iron to a tough green which is no easy shot.

The decision is a tough one, especially since there is not a lot of green to work with and with a 3 wood, chances are you'll put it over the green if you clear the water. It depends what shot you want to play more, an 160 yard shot over water from the fairway, or a 40 yard chip from behind the green in the heavy rough (that is if you clear the water).

This is a hole with so many possibilites, and every time you play it, there will be a different shot to make. A great risk-reward hole indeed. Even more amazing is that there is not a single bunker on this hole! 1
