The San Francisco Peaks (Nuvatukya'ovi) visible across the Painted Desert from the Hopi Mesas some 65 miles away are among the most sacred places of the Hopis. Shrines are located on the Peaks and they are the kachina home and mark the southwest cardinal direction. This view of the Peaks is from Dinnebito Wash in the Painted Desert a short distance north of its junction with the Little Colorado River (Paayu). Dinnebito Wash drains from Black Mesa along the west side of Third Mesa. (Photo by author)
