Primitive Features of Cradle Dolls

Features of present-day cradle kachina dolls appearing in kiva murals and petroglyphs dating to the 1300-1400s. The pictures of a portion of a restored Anasazi kiva mural at the left and petroglyph in the middle show obvious kachina figures with a necklace very similar to that typically painted on contemporary cradle kachina dolls. The cave painting of the "All American Man" on the right shows a red-striped pattern on the lower body that also resembles that on cradle kachinas. (Sources of photos: Left - Dockstader, F. J. 1985.
