Potsherd with Kachina Figure

Potsherd dating to 1350 showing an obvious kachina mask, but which does not resemble any type recorded during the past 200 years. The feathers with asymmetrical black tips hanging from the lower edge of the mask are similar to those seen in contemporary kachina masks and in pottery designs, and the vertical lines at the bases of the feathers probably represent the horsehair "beards"characteristic of many types of kachinas.
