Use your Web browser to open http://www.aol.com. and click on the People option near the top of the page. You should now see selections for trying the service for free. From here, choose AOL Instant Messenger. To register as a new AOL Instant messenger user, you must enter a screen name and password. The screen name will also become your chat room name. After you choose your name and password, you can download and install AOL Instant Messenger.
As you proceed, a file download dialog box will display, which will allow you to save the instant messenger instillation file. However, you can change the option to run it from the current location. This action installs the application but doesn't store the file on your hard disk.
As you install Instant Messenger, you'll be asked to accept a license agreement. Be sure that you read and accept the terms of the agreement before continuing. You'll then be asked to verify the directory where you want to install AOL Instant Messenger. In situations like this, it's usually wise to accept the defaults.
When you start running Instant Messenger, you'll see a sign-on screen. Key in your screen name and your password, and you'll be logged on to AOL's Instant Messenger system.
