The Gambling Son


Scene 1: A boy named Scottie and his 
father are at a pool hall about to 
play for fun, they are talking. 
The Background (By Third Eye Blind) 
is playing in the background.



SCOTTIE:
You ready to play some pool?



FATHER:
Yea, I'm ready, but I have something 
to tell you..



SCOTTIE:
I'll let you go fir.. 



FATHER:
I'm your Father!



SCOTTIE:
Dad!!!



FATHER:
Scottie!




SCOTTIE:
I love you dad.



FATHER:
Alright, Let's play some pool.



SCOTTIE:
You can go first.



FATHER:
No, I'll let you go first.



SCOTTIE:
Thanks dad.



FATHER:
Slugger!



He takes a shot, he gets one in. 
The music fades away.


SCOTTIE:
Ooh, nice.



FATHER:
You get a point, hit me.



Scottie raises his stick as if he is 
about to hit him.



FATHER:
Not physically.



Scottie takes another shot, he misses 
horribly, he laughs.


SCOTTIE:
You know something, that was a bad shot.



FATHER:
Son, I have something to tell you, you suck at pool.



SCOTTIE:
Yea, I know, but you know something, 
I don't care, I just love you dad.



Music starts up again.



FATHER:
Did you ever hear of a kid named Simon Birch?



SCOTTIE:
No.



FATHER:
Neither did I.



The father takes a shot, he gets it in, 
he blows on the stick as though he is
blowing smoke from a gun. 
New Direction (By Sugar Ray) 
is playing in the background. 
The son walks toward the pool table.



SCOTTIE:
My shot!



Scottie takes a shot and misses 
badly. The camera focuses on 
both of their reactions.



CUTTO:



Scene 2: Scottie is sitting down 
almost at tears, his father comes 
to him. Iris (By the Goo-Goo dolls) 
is playing in the background.



FATHER:
You alright?



SCOTTIE:
Yea, you know, it's all like, crazy..



They both cover their face and start 
violently crying. Then they get up, 
and walk away into the distance.



CUTTO:



Scene 3: Scottie and his dad 
are standing there with their arms 
around each other, they look at 
each other, smile, then look at the 
camera and run off into the distance, 
then they come back, then they run 
off again. Iris (By the Goo-Goo Dolls) 
is still playing in the background.



CUTTO:



Scene 4: Scottie and his dad are 
dancing and playing catch with a 
tennis ball to the rhythm of Falls 
Apart, (Sugar Ray) 
which is playing in the background. 
Then they start playing catch, 
the dad wins best of 3, and the son is sad, 
but then the Father hugs him, 
they are happy again.



CUTTO:



Scene 5: The father is sitting down 
in his chair at his house, 
his son comes in from outside.



SCOTTIE:
Hey Dad!



FATHER:
Hey son, did you have fun outside?



SCOTTIE:
Umm, yea, Bobby is a real nice kid.. 
Umm, hey dad, can I borrow, like, 
a few bucks, a few bucks? Umm..



FATHER:
Why?



SCOTTIE:
Well, me and my friend want to 
go over to the arcade.. and...



FATHER:
OHH!! Sure.



SCOTTIE:
Umm.. can I borrow like, a.. 
umm, a few hundred, hundred bucks?



FATHER:
( trusting him)
Sure, go have some fun kiddo.



He gives Scottie the money.



SCOTTIE:
Thanks dad!!



The Father turns to the camera.



FATHER:
Kids.



In the background, his son is 
giving a sly look at his father.



CUTTO:



Scene 6: Scottie walks into the 
same pool hall as scene 1, 
there is a gambler there, 
Scottie goes up to him. 
Inter San Man (By Metallica) 
is playing in the background.



SCOTTIE:
Hey man, did you ever think of 
playing for.. Money?



GAMBLER:
What, $20?



SCOTTIE:
I was thinking more man money, say, 
like.. hundred bucks, or maybe even 200?



Scottie hands the pool stick to the gambler.



GAMBLER:
Let's get it on!



Scottie places the money on the table. 
Then, the Gambler is about to make 
his first shot.



GAMBLER:
This is going to be simple.



SCOTTIE:
(mad)
Try me!



The Gambler makes a shot and gets one in, 
you see his hand take the money from 
the pool table. Scottie is getting worried, 
he puts more money in. Scottie shoots, 
and he misses, then the Gambler pushes 
the ball in and takes the money, 
Scottie is worried, The Gambler gives 
him an evil smile.



CUTTO:



Scene 7: it's the same place, 
Inter San Man (by Metallica) 
is still playing in the background, 
Scottie is checking his pockets, 
he has one dollar left, he slams 
it down on the table, the Gambler 
gives him a pathetic laugh. You see 
a ball about to go in the hole, 
but it stops, then you see the 
Gamblers hand push it in, and take 
the dollar. Scottie is very mad at him.



SCOTTIE:
You Cheater!



The Gambler runs up to him, and grabs 
his shirt collar.



GAMBLER:
what are you calling me boy?!!!



SCOTTIE:
(scared)
umm. Not.. nothing..



The screen turns black, you hear a punch, 
then a scream.



CUTTO:



Scene 8: The dad is still sitting 
in his chair, you see the son come 
in with a black eye, he is crawling, 
the father seems upset.



FATHER:
Son, what happened.



SCOTTIE:
Me and my friends were playing soccer, 
after we went to the arcade, 
and it hit my eye! But .. can 
I go back out and play, I just 
wanted to get an ice cube, or face cloth.



He picks up a face cloth.



SCOTTIE:
So, can I go back out and play daddy?



FATHER:
Yea, why not.



SCOTTIE:
Can I borrow a few more bucks?



FATHER:
Alright.



He hands it to him, Scottie trips 
out of being nervous, and out of 
curiosity, the Father follows him.


CUTTO:



Scene 9: Scottie walks over to the same 
Gambler, he is determined. Narcolepsy 
(By Third Eye Blind) 
is playing in the background.



SCOTTIE:
(throwing his facecloth down)
Don't worry about it!



GAMBLER:
So we're here for our weekly visit?



SCOTTIE:
Weekly visit.. 



They hear something.



GAMBLER:
What was that?



Scottie looks, his father is there.



FATHER:
Son, I'm very ashamed of you.



SCOTTIE:
Don't be ashamed of me dad, 
I'll never do it again, I promise!



FATHER:
I love you son.



SCOTTIE:
( going to hug him)
I love you dad, I love you dad!



The gambler is ashamed of himself, 
he throws the money at them.



GAMBLER:
(leaving)
Take the freaking money!



Scottie turns to his dad proudly.



 SCOTTIE:
Dad, let's pick up this money and go home.



FATHER:
Good advice.



They pick up the money and run out.



CUTTO:



Scene 10: Scottie is dancing to 
the end of Narcolepsy (By Third Eye blind) 
which is playing in the background. 



SCOTTIE:
Come here dad.



They hug and start dancing, 
at the last lyrics of the song, 
Scottie mouths the words and 
pretends that there is a microphone 
in front of him.



CUTTO:



Scene 11: Scottie is sitting down 
almost at tears, his father comes 
to him. Iris (By the Goo-Goo dolls) 
is playing in the background.



FATHER:
You alright?



SCOTTIE:
Yea, you know, it's just, crazy..



They both cover their face and 
start violently crying. 


CUTTO:



Scene 12: Scottie and his dad are 
standing there with their 
arms around each other, 
they look at each other, 
smile, then look at the camera.

is still playing in the background.



SCOTTIE:
I love you dad!



FATHER:
I love you son.



They hug.



FATHER:
Come on son, ( trying to push him) come on!



SCOTTIE:
Dad, let's go home!



They walk away in the distance.
