On 14 February 2000, Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott announced that he had ordered a public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the Marchioness Disaster and its causes. The public inquiry is officially known as "Marchioness/Bowbelle Formal Investigation" (under Merchant Shipping Act, 1995). |

The Marchioness/Bowbelle Formal Investigation convened on 2nd October 2000 followed by the Non-Statutory Inquiry into identification procedures. Hearings completed on 18 December 2000. By Command of Her Majesty the Final Reports were presented to Parliament by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions March 2001. |
