Jack London

Writers Write About Things They Know

Objectives

  1. Students will find information on the internet about Jack London's life and writings.
  2. Students will read about the life of Jack London and take notes.
  3. Students will record and order the 15 events which are most outstanding to them about the life of Jack London
  4. Students will be able to defend a position in writing that proves that Jack London's life's experiences are reflected in his writings.
  5. Students writing will include comments from other readers of Jack London's works
  6. Students will find and collect photographs from published materials to include on a timeline.

Materials/Resources Needed

  1. Web sites about Jack London
  2. Computers for each student with access to the internet
  3. Construction paper
  4. Graph paper for timeline
  5. Use links to the internet including the suggested sites.

Procedures

Try these sites to amass information on the life and times of Jack London.

Save notes with a URL of web sites so they can be credited. Look for information(at least 15 citations events in his life and titles of the stories he published). Then spend some time reading what others thought of his writings. Collect notes from web pages on the author's life and times to write short answers to these questions
  1. Show a detail in Jack London's life which ultimately resurfaced in one of his stories of fiction.
  2. Use a timeline to show at least 15 details of Jack London's life on the top of a timeline, and then show at least 10 stories and the year. each was published on the bottom of the same timeline.
  3. Draw some conclusions about how the life of the author determined the details of his fictional stories.
  4. Write a five paragraph essay based on the premise that "an author writes about what he knows" using the author Jack London.

    Evaluation

    Students must hand in a timeline of London's life and works. Then they will write a five paragraph essay to show that London writes details in his fiction that he has experienced in his lifetime. Rubrics for both tasks will determine grade.
