Materials/Resources Needed
- Three highlighters (different colors)
- 2 Spelling lists (one with all words spelled correctly and the pretest with some words misspelled)
- blue or black pen
Procedures
- Student will read words on the spelling list silently.
- Student will see misspelled words on the list.
- Student will highlight only misspelled words on the spelling list.
- Student will respell only highlighted words correctly.
- Student will correct his/her own spelling test with the correctly spelled words on a list with a different color.
Evaluation
Students check their own spelling tests with another list of correctly spelled words. This helps them to recognize if their errors are primarily not recognizing misspelled words, or if they are not able to respell words that they have recognized as misspelled. The reason that this skill needs to be practiced in a guided practice setting, is that during PSSA students must execute these steps in order to write an essay free spelling errors without help.
