J M Lazim also known as Markusan J. M. Lazim is a Singaporean conventional artist. Studied in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1965 to 1967. He graduated from a design college in United Kingdom in 1978 as an interior designer and became an associate of the Institute of Professional Designers, London in 1979. Lazim also possesed Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Iinformation Technology.
Lazim has participated in many local and international art exhibitions and had received several awards including Singapore National Day Art Award. He was an active person in arts during the seventies and have ever been appointed as organizing committee for Singapore state art show "National day Art Exhibition" jointly organized by the government and local art organizations. He was a President of the Singapore Youth Artist Association and Secretary General of Association of Artists of Various Resources (APAD) in Singapore during 1960 and 1970.
He had in the past participated in radio and television talk shows on arts produced by former producer Adnan Isa of Radio Television Singapore. His stories appeared in several local and Malaysian news papers on several occasions. He was once known as Pablo Picasso of Malaysia - an article written by a Malaysian journalist Bahyah Mahmud. Two of his abstract paintings became a personal collection of the first president of Singapore Mr. Yusof Ishak, after the late president officiated his arts and crafts exhibition held at Jalan Eunos School Hall in 1966.
This talented artist was a computer illiterate but became interested in computer graphics in 1987. He attended several courses in computer hardware as well as software and do a lot of reading and research works particularly in subjects related to computer design, graphics and desk top publication. Lazim further his studies through distant learning in Information Technology and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in IT with one of the leading University in U S A. He is now a pro in computer graphics and has worked for some reputable and well known design studios in Singapore and in overseas. Presently he is a Personal Advisor to the President of a Multi National Corporation in Singapore taking care of Marketing, Communication and MultiMedia Department.
Lazim has decided to put a pause to his conventional painting method of using paint, easel and canvas temporarily and concentrate fully in digital painting using high technological and sophisticated digital equipments. He took this opportunity to combine his artistic talent and creativity together with technologies to produce world class digital paintings.
The Artist has successfully completed his first solo digital art exhibitions held at Funan The IT Mall from the 10th to 13th November 2000. The exhibition was proudly presented by Epson Square Graphics and Arts Studio and jointly sponsored by Epson Singapore Pte Ltd, Funan The IT Mall, P A Mart Pte Ltd and Wacom Intuos Digitizer Co of Japan. The same collection of digital paintings will be exhibited at five major cities around the world including, Sydney, San Francisco, New York, London and Paris from beginning of next year (2001).
J M Lazim Digital Paintings Exhibition 2000 has been a great success, approximately about 5000 people visited the said exhibition. Wide coverage of publicity was given to his exhibition, this include a special program by Television Twelve / Media Corp of Singapore on the making of digital paintings, local news papers and magazines and front page of Singapore Berita Minggu (Sunday News).
