Some of things my mother, Teri Nicholas, remembered are Woodstock, the John F. Kennedy assassination, Elvis Presley dying, the Manson murders, and the Vietnam War. My mother has memories from all of these events and all happened at different times in her life.
Woodstock
My mother was fourteen years old when Woodstock started in 1969. She remembers seeing images of young people on T.V. and in newspapers. She said, "Looks like fun." Meanwhile her mother, father, and other adults were outraged and disturbed at the images of drugs and nudity they were seeing. My mother remembers people saying, "It was one big party." 400,000 people crowded into the small town of Bethel, New York (Daniel 1969). "The Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969 drew more than 450,000 people to a pasture in SullivanCounty. For four days, the site became a countercultural mini-nation in which minds were open, drugs were all but legal and love was free". The music began Friday afternoon at 5:07pm August 15 and continued until mid-morning Monday August 18. The festival closed the New York State Thruway and created one of the nation's worst traffic jams. It also inspired a slew of local and state laws to ensure that nothing like it would ever happen again (Times Herald).
John F. Kennedy
Another historical event that happened in my mothers' life is the John F. Kennedy assassination. It was November 22, 1963. My mother remember it was all that was on T.V. She remembers seeing John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline sitting in the convertible one minute and then seeing Jacqueline lying over the President the next. ;She watched the funeral on television with her mother and saw the Kennedy's two children hand in hand standing beside their mother."I was only eight years old, but I remember how sad of an event it was for everyone," said Teri Nicholas. President John F Kennedy was the 35th President and the youngest President to be elected and the youngest to die at only 46 years old (Biography John). He had just been in office for two years and 10 months as Chief Executive. The world mourned Kennedy's death, and presidents, premiers, and members of royalty walked behind the casket at his funeral. Kennedy was succeeded as president by Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson (Wilentz).
The King
"I was driving home from work when I heard on the radio the he died.I was in complete shock," said Teri Nicholas on the death of Elvis Presley. My mother was 22 years old at this time. She never really listened to Elvis. Elvis Aron Presley died on August 16, 1977 from a drug overdose in his bathroom (Biography Elvis). This came as a shock to the nation. Elvis was such an  to everyone who listened to him. He was one of the first white Americans to sing African American music, such as the Blues. He sang a variety of greatly diverse songs from country, to rock n' roll, and the blues. He created a new era of music. My mother also remembered Memphis flags lowered to half staff along with thousands of people crying all over the news. "It was such a sad time for many people," added Teri.
Manson
The Manson Murders are something else my mother remembers. Charles Manson went on a murder streak, killing seven adults and an unborn child. He was arrested for these murders in December of 1969. My mother especially remembers hearing about the murder of Sharon Tate, an actress, who was eight months pregnant. Sharon Tate was having a small get together with some friends while her husband was away on business. Charles Manson brutally murdered Tate and five friends that night. Tate's unborn baby was also murdered. Two people were found on the lawn the next morning while Tate and another friend were found tied together by rope hanging over a rafter in the ceiling. My mother remembers everyone being outraged that something so horrible could happen to someone, especially to an unborn baby. My mom also says, " I remember crying and feeling so bad for the baby." Tate was murdered in her Beverly Hills home along with five other guests (Daniel 1969).
Vietnam
The Vietnam War was another mile stone in my mothers life. The draft was initiated in this time and she remembers fearing her brothers would be sent off to war.She also remembers draft deserters. These people would run away to Canada or other countries to avoid being drafted in the war. ;The Vietnam War began in the 1964 and did not end until the mid 1970's.
Shared Events
Some events that have happened and I have shared with my parents are the Oklahoma City Federal building bombing, Princess Diana's death, the World Trade Centers falling, and Space Shuttle Columbia exploding. ';The two that especially stick out in my memory is the WorldTradeCenters and the Space Shuttle Columbia.'These are the most recent. These are all historical moments in history that I remember. '
