Chapter 1 - Chain tensioner failure
Recognizing the damage
On March 9, 2003, as I headed out the door for the first autocross of the season, I turned the key and heard a metallic clinking noise followed by failure of the engine to start.  Subsequently, I discovered that my engine experienced what every 16-valve owner dreads - failure of the cam chain tensioner.  Thjs resulted in damage to the head, camshafts, cam chain, and possibly the valves.  This page will show what happened and my process of repairing it.  It will be a work in progress as repair requires time, money, and skill (all of which I am lacking).
As you can see, the pad rode onto the sprocket, breaking the chain and breaking teeth off both camshafts.
Another view of the same, showing the cracked 16-valve head, which will have to be welded back together.
With the chain and tensioner off, you can see the damage done to the head when the tensioner was pulled off.
