Split Enz were the amazing New Zealand band from which Crowded House, The Swingers, The Finn Brothers and Tim & Neil Finn's solo material would all come. Formed in Auckland in 1973 by Tim Finn and Phil Judd the bands early albums were an eclectic mix of different sounds. The bands live presentation of rather bizarre costumes and even more bizarre haircuts made them difficult to categorise and the early albums Mental Notes & Second Thoughts failed to achieve any notable chart success. Amongst a number of lineup changes, band leader Phil Judd quit, leaving control of the band to Tim Finn who recruited younger brother Neil. 1977’s Dizrythmia saw the band beginning to move away from their arty image and complex song structures and the single My Mistake went top 20 in Australia. 1978’s Frenzy saw the band moving towards the more commercial sound they would become famous for and I See Red gave them more success on the singles chart. True Colours would see the band release an enormously successful Pop album and follow it with Corroboree, which would further enhance their success. This show, recorded at the Comb & Cutter Hotel in Blacktown (Sydney) and broadcast by the JJJ network, was a couple of months before True Colours was released and Split Enz popularity would skyrocket. This lineup is arguably the classic Split Enz of: Tim Finn: Vocals Neil Finn: Vocals & Guitar Noel Crombie: Percussion Eddie Rayner: Keyboards Nigel Griggs: Bass Mal Green: Drums The set: 1. Intro 2. I Wouldn’t Dream Of It 3. Poor Boy 4. Nobody Takes Me Seriously 5. What’s The Matter With You 6. Shark Attack 7. I Hope I Never 8. I Got You 9. I See Red JM Notes: A fantastic show with only a few station id's to downgrade it. Highly recommended.
