POEMS
Here are some poems that I think are really nice. I did not write any of these though, they are just ones I like. Enjoy! ;)
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change
The courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference
Children Learn What they Live
If a child lives with critisism,
They learn to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility,
They learn to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule,
They learn to be shy.
If a child lives with shame,
They learn to feel guilty.
If a child lives with tolerance,
They learn to be patient.
If a child lives with encouragement,
They learn confidence.
If a child lives with praise,
They learn to appreciate.
If a child lives with fairness,
They learn justice.
If a child lives with security,
They learn to have faith.
If a child lives with approval,
They learn to like themself.
If a child lives with acceptance and friendship,
They learn to find love in the world.
A Dream Within a Dream- Edgar Allan Poe
Take this kiss upon thy brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep
While I weep-while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
Desiderata- Max Ehrmann
Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Excercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with such imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome disipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.
Natural Life, Written by my sister Hannah Garrett
I sit here contently by the trees,
Who really cares if I get fleas,
Like everyone I'm prone to disease.
I listen deeply to the creek flowing by,
I watch the clouds as they fill the sky,
Still the sun peaks through up above
I hear chirping of birds and feel the love.
The autumn leaves here falling to the ground,
It's all so peaceful, nature is the only sound.
The grounds so muddy and damp,
The sun is the only lamp.
I see birds, crows flying high above me in the air,
The whole time I'm hoping they won't shit in my hair,
I wouldn't hurt them though, I'd only glare,
Thinking of how life just isn't fair.
Nature is lovely, but still contains danger,
like the damage that is caused by a total stranger,
I think it is disgustingly mean
When people don't want to keep this planet clean.
I believe everyone should unite to keep this place real,
Not so realistic, but I can't help how I feel.
I wonder if I should take a leaf,
but I decide not to, I'd feel like a theif,
Because nature is like a beautiful song,
I believe we should leave things where they belong.
