Aaron Tossey1

Aaron Tossey, who immigrated to Union County, Ohio by 1823, was born 10 August 1792 at Brentwood, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. His parentage is undetermined but a number of Tossey listings are found in early New Hampshire and Massachusetts records indicating the family immigrated there in earlier times. The surname Tossey and a variety at related surnames are found in English and mainland European records.

Aaron served in the War of 1812 at the Battle of Lake Chaplain, New York. His service record indicates he enlisted in Captain Daniel Blishs Co., 3 Battalion detached militia, State of New York. He appears as Private Aaron H. G. Tossey on the companies payroll for the period 9 Sept 1813 thru 19 Nov 1913 - pay per month $8.00 total $18.93 and allowed one day travel. The roll dated at Camp Platsburg 18 Nov 1813.

Aaron was married on 24 March 1814 at Jay, Essex County, New York, to Elizabeth Delano Soule, born 29 April 1787, at Woodstock, Windsor County, Vermont to Stephen and Mary Shaw Delano. Through the Delano family Elizabeth was descended from Richard Warren a signer of the Mayflower Compact and Phillipe de la Noye, the first French Huguenot to come to America. Elizabeth was first married to Aaron Soule by whom she had a son, Calen.2

(Speculating a bit on the basis of limited information at hand one may surmise that Elizabeth had married Aaron Soule and been typical of many wives in that day in being a camp follower as her husbands army unit moved about. Possibly her husband was killed and Aaron Tossey married her as the widow of a fallen comrade in arms. Their family bible indicates the first born were twins born three months3 after their marriage. Could it be these were fathered by Aaron Soule her first husband?)

Aaron and Elizabeth Tossey migrated to Ohio in about 1815. A review of Ohio historical records indicate many Delano's came to Ohio but Aaron is the single reference to a Tossey coming during that era of migration. Since it was usual for migration of that time to be done in groups by wagon train it is probable that Aaron had married into the Delano family and migrated with the clan. Elizabeths parents Stephen and Mary Shaw Delano according to one source lived and are buried at Worthington, Ohio, their deaths occurring about 1822.

Aaron Tossey is first found in Ohio public records showing his purchase of land in Union County, Ohio. This was an Indenture from Elizabeth Graham and others on 25 Sept 1822. Union County was not formed until 1820 so he may well have purchased other land earlier.

Aaron and Elizabeth became well known citizens of Mill Creek Township, Union County, Ohio and had a total of 8 children several of whom married within the community and are represented by many present day Union County descendents as well as others scattered over Ohio and other states.

Aaron died on 7 Nov 1877 at the age of 85. Elizabeth died on 28 June 1877 at the age of 89. Both are buried at the Watkins cemetery maintained by the Trustees of Mill Creek Township of Union County.

Notes by Joan McCready, 11 Dec 2002:

1.  No source is sited for this document. I will speculate that, given that Solon, Philemon and Elizabeth's dates of death are not given, that it was written before they died (1880, 1914 and 1905, respectively), which would place it between 1877 (death year of Aaron and Elizabeth) and 1880.

2.  Aaron and Elizabeth Soule also had another son, Aaron David Soule. Both Soule boys traveled to Union County, Ohio with Aaron and Elizabeth Tossey - although Soule family history has it that Aaron David travelled with his father to Union Co, Ohio, then on to Michigan. Calen remained in Union County and wed Elizabeth (Betsy) Bell. Aaron, Jr., move to the Kalamazoo, Michigan area. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maizeblue6/index3l1.html for more information.

3. Whoever wrote this article miscalculated the birth dates of the twins. Aaron and Elizabeth were married in March 1814; the twins were born in October of that year - seven months later. Elvira died in June of 1815, while Almira died in June of 1816 the writer may have picked up the June month of the girls deaths in asserting that they were born three months after Aaron and Elizabeth were wed.

4. My aunt currently has this bible in her posession, and I have a photocopy of its pages (soon to be added to this site). JMc 16 Dec 2002
