Frisbrews

The Sport of Kings of Beers

The object of Frisbrews is to drink beer and knock down the empty cans with a frisbee in order to score more points than your opponent. The game is played by two or four players, somewhat like horseshoes. When a player finishes a beer, the empty can is added to the player's available targets. This is the challenge of Frisbrews: The more beer you drink, the more targets you get and the harder it is to hit them. The game is best played on sandy beach where alcoholic beverages are permitted. Level open areas, such as a lawn or sand lot, may also be suitable. The required equipment consists of a frisbee and plenty of cold canned beer.

Play

To start the first game, each player opens a can of beer and drinks it. The first player to finish his (or her) beer gets the first shot and choice of end of court. Play starts when each opponent (single player or team of two) has at least one empty can. The cans are placed upright on the ground a distance of 20 normal steps apart. Opponents stand at opposite ends and alternately make shots with the frisbee in an attempt to knock down their target can(s). For team play, teammates stand together at the same end. Players must stay behind the line of target(s) when shooting or catching. Catching players may catch the moving frisbee when it is past the targets. Players continue to drink beer while playing. When a player finishes a beer, the empty can is immediately added to his targets. Additional targets are placed in line with the others, spaced one frisbee-width apart (see diagram). The game ends when an opponent achieves a winning score. Targets can be carried over to subsequent games, or not, at the players' discretion. If wind is deemed to be a factor, opponents should switch ends of the court each time the combined total score reaches a multiple of 10 (7-3, 10-0, 15-15, etc), maintaining the correct number of targets for each opponent.

Scoring

The game is played to 21 points, win by two. Three points are awarded for each target knocked down by the frisbee "on the fly"; that is, when the frisbee hits the target before hitting the ground or anything else. One point is awarded for each target knocked down after the frisbee touches the ground, including targets knocked down by flying sand or debris. If a player accidentally knocks over an opponent's target, the opponent is awarded one point per target, except while setting up targets. If a target is knocked down by wind or outside influence, no points are awarded. Points are never deducted.

Strategy Tips

Frisbrews play typically conforms to a standard Beer Curve Model, thus a good beer drinker can gain an advantage over a good frisbee player by rapidly building up to his optimal number of targets on the beer curve.

The opponent shooting with the wind usually has the advantage.

Since the frisbee can roll, or fly, back into the targets after passing them, it is to the catching player's advantage to stop it quickly.

Accidental knocking down of targets may become a significant factor late in the game when more targets are on the court and when players are prone to sloppy play, carelessness, stumbling, etc.

History

Frisbrews was invented by John McCabe, Tom Woodward and friends one day at Cape Canaveral beach park, Florida in about 1980. The photo above features Tom making a shot during the World Championship match held at Cayo Costa, Florida in 2004 (Photo by John McCabe).

THIS IS A GAME FOR ADULTS ONLY. Do not play this game if you are under the legal drinking age. Drink responsibly. Do not drink and drive. Know when to say when. Etc, etc.
