The Joy (Chapter Three)

The nightmare always began the same way. He and Usagi were in the 
delivery room and about to have the baby. But when the baby came 
out, it was a monster! It had this eye on it's forehead and five 
arms. How could this be happening?! Mamoru shot up from bed and 
he felt the sweat drip from his forehead. Thank God, it was dream. 
But the same dream he had for a month.

"Mamo-chan? What's wrong?", Usagi said sitting up. She wrapped her 
arms around his waist and kissed the side of his head. He was trembling 
like a child. He looked into her worried eyes and immediately he was 
calm. Usagi had that affect on him. "You can tell me" She stroked his 
hair. "I love you"

"I love you Usako", He said quietly and Mamoru saw the tears that rose
in her eyes. Tears of doubt. Was she doubting his love for her? She
only nodded and laid back down turning her face away. He laid back
down too and wrapped his arms around her waist. He at least tried to.
Usagi had reached her fifth month and was even more beautiful but her
eyes were sad looking at him. As he closed his eyes Mamoru saw them in
his mind.

Usagi on the other hand was reflecting on the past five months. Mamoru
had changed slowly and not for the better. He was simply in a matter
becoming a JERK. She just couldn't understand why he didn't wanna talk
about the baby, not even to talk about baby names. Usagi realized that
she had never asked him if he even wanted this baby. He didn't even
want to marry her. It was wrong for her to even want a baby he cared
nothing about. But Usagi in those few months began to love the whole
idea of mother. The swell of her stomach and the baby clothes she got
to pick. But most of all the kicks she would get from the baby's small
feet. Usagi knew that Mamoru was practically uninterested in this child, 
when she made him touch her stomach his eyes were blank, emotionless 
while she'd shed tears over it. It dawned on her that she might have 
to make the biggest sacrifice she'd ever make. 

She would have to choose between both of them.

The air by the sea was cool and refreshing. Playing with Usagi's hair,
it also caught the scent of the food she ate. Mamoru looked as she pour
ketchup all over everything and nodded his head. It was good to see the
old Usagi back, appetite and all.

"So that's a lot of ketchup you have there", He commented with a smile.

"Um-hmm", Usagi agreed and pour even more on. "I feel great!" She looked
up at him and gave him a dazzling smile. "I'm not throwing anything up
and I can get a decent night sleep now" Was there anytime she didn't 
talk about anything that had to do with the baby?! He thought in
annoyance about it. Usagi gave him another coy smile. "And since
I'm feeling better I thought we could...spend some time together
tonight, if you want" 

"CHECK PLEASE!", Mamoru yelled and without another word pulled
Usagi from her chair.

Minako and Motoki watched as the small red sports car ZOOMED past them
and then cut a corner with a SCREECH. What was that about? Picking up
the shopping bags they had dropped in surprised they heard a loud yell
come from the car.

"Was that...Usagi?", Minako asked with her eyebrows raised.

"And I'm pretty sure that's Mamoru's car", Motoki responded. "Usually
he drives like an old man"

"Now why would anyone risk killing thousands of people and getting
arrested for speeding? What could the reason be?", She asked with
a smile, Motoki gave her a sly grin. They knew why.

"There is only ONE reason someone would risk all of that"

"La, la, la", Usagi sang softly along as the elevator made it's way
up to their apartment. At the moment she was very greatful that they
hadn't gotten killed in the process of getting there. She could still
here the yell of police officer as the drove past his car. That was
gonna be one BIG ticket. Mamoru who was next to her held Usagi's hand
tightly and she was annoyed by the tapping of his impatient foot. "Can
you STOP with that?!" He stopped but when the DING of the door came she
was quickly yanked into the hallway and finally to their apartment...
where she saw Rei and Yuuichirou with a box of old baby clothes.

"Oh God no", Mamoru muttered. Now was not the time.

"Hey you guys! We brought over the baby clothes for you-", Rei said.

"Ok thanks! Well just leave them on front door", Mamoru said as he 
fumbled with the keys. Finally he had gotten the door open.

"But-", Rei said.

"We've gotta go! Bye!", Mamoru said and pulled Usagi in quickly.

"Bye Rei, Bye Yuuichirou!", Usagi said. SLAM! Rei saw the door
close in her face.

"That was RUDE", Rei remarked and her husband put an arm around
her.

"It's their fifth month, we know what THAT'S about", Yuuichirou
said as he led her away.

Giggling Usagi kissed Mamoru with as much fervor as he was giving
her at the moment. He kissed her and led her quickly to their room 
where he closed the door with a slam.

"I love you Mamo-chan", She said breathlessly as he kissed her
neck.

"I love you", He responded though he was at that moment enraptured
in her smell, her skin, her soft lips...

"MAMO-CHAN!", She yelled and pushed him away. "The baby just kicked!"
He gave her a dubious look. So?!

"Doesn't it always kick?!", He asked obviously irratated. Mamoru began
kissing her again but she pushed him away. "Is there a problem?" 

"I don't think we should do...this", Usagi said worriedly. "I don't
think the baby likes it" Mamoru felt like pulling his hair off.

"The baby doesn't LIKE it?!", Mamoru said loudly. "If we didn't do
it, there would be no baby!" Usagi's eyes filled with tears. 

"Please Mamo-chan, not until we ask the doctor", She said sweetly.

"Okay", He sighed and walked off to take a long, COLD shower.

Motoki watched as his friend hit the baseball with a loud crack.
The machine pitched another one and with another CRACK he hit the
ball...almost hitting Motoki.

"Is there something wrong?", Motoki asked as Mamoru sat on a bench.

"Isn't it obvious?", Mamoru asked.

"Lemme guess, you haven't got some in weeks", Motoki said. "Feeling
a little frustrated, eh?"

"More like MONTHS", Mamoru said. "I haven't got any sleep either,
I just get these nightmares about the baby having three eyes and
ten arms sometimes five and little mishaped ears. What is going on
with me?"

"You're just scared about not being a good dad", Motoki said and
looked at him sincerely. "You will be though Mamoru, I've seen
how you are around Rei's little girl, you'll be great"

"Will I?", Mamoru asked him with a sad note in his voice.

"Yeah, I'm sure of it", Motoki said.

"Thank you", He replied quietly when he glanced at a calender
on a nearby wall of the sports club. "OH NO! I was suppose to
meet Usagi for a doctor's appoinment" 

Running off he didn't even hear Motoki's goodbye

Walking into the apartment Mamoru put down the bouquet of roses on
a nearby table. He had went all the way to the doctor's office just
to find out Usagi had left. The doctor had given enough information
to assume that she was very upset. It was pretty obvious, she had
called him a pigheaded, stupid, slimy jerk. Yup she was mad. Walking
into their bedroom he stopped in the doorway to take in the sight.

It was Usagi. She was packing.

"Where are you going?", He asked silently.

"I'm leaving you", Usagi answered with a hard tone. "You don't 
care about me or this baby. I won't take it, I won't let MY child 
feel unwanted" She put another pair of clothing in the bag and then
shut it. Usagi looked up and he saw the tears in her eyes. Tears
of hurt.

"Where will you go?", He asked chokingly. Usagi stopped and looked
at him.

"To Yuuichirou and Rei's", Usagi answered. "They'll help me, I'll 
spare you and tell my father that I left you myself. I'd go to one 
of my other friends but they have their own lives, they don't need 
a pregnant Usagi getting in her way. Rei knows how I feel she'll 
help me, I don't need you Mamoru. Not anymore"

"And the baby?", He asked.

"I'll raise it alone", Usagi replied and looked down. Her heart was
breaking in two but she wouldn't show it. She had to be strong for
the baby. Walking to the front door she stopped and put a video tape
in Mamoru's hands. 

With a final look, she left. And he was alone.

Slowly walking he went into the living room and put the video tape into
his VCR. Mamoru sat down and turned on the televison. Before him came
the picture of the most beautiful thing in the world. A sonogram of
a child. His child. Mamoru watched as it's small hand waved back and
forth and then settled as the baby sucked it's thumb. He didn't even
realize that his eyes were filled with tears.

"That's my kid", He said with quiet pride and the tears fell. How could
he have been so stupid? Something in him had clicked and realized that
he had given the two most important things in his life because he was
afraid. Afraid of what kind of father he would be just because he 
couldn't remember his own. Mamoru got up and left.

He had to get Usagi before it was too late.
