PG-13 This is a alternate reality so be prepared for a different storyline. The only things in life you regret, Are the risks that you didn't take. -Unknown Until I truly loved, I was alone. -Unknown Author Your life and my life flow into each other as wave flows into wave, and unless there is peace and joy and freedom for you, there can be no real peace or joy or freedom for me. To see reality--not as we expect it to be but as it is--is to see that unless we live for each other and in and through each other, we do not really live very satisfactory; that there can really be life only where there really is, in just this sense, love. -Frederick Buechner He is the smile in my heart The smile I've waited a lifetime to find. -Anonymous Against All Odds By JLaLa (jlynpinay@aol.com) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mamoru gripped the steering wheel of his car as he sped along the highway in small sportscar. Looking at the clock of his car he cursed knowing that he had five minutes to get to Usagi. Five minutes to prove that he loved her, that he needed her to stay. Parking on the curb he raced into the airport and to the place where he knew her plane would be leaving. He stopped at her gate, just in time to see her plane take off and his mind wandered to when all of it began... ^How can I just let you walk away^ Just let you leave without a trace Usagi paced the room in anger. She couldn't believe that he was being so unreasonable, so demanding of her. This was her chance of a lifetime, a chance to study art in New York and he was ruining the happy news for her. "How could you not want me to go?", Usagi asked angrily as Mamoru leaned his forehead against a wall. "I thought you'd be happy for me" Mamoru didn't want her to go, this was her chance to go meet some other guy, another guy who could love better than he could though inside he knew no one would love her like he could. The thought of her leaving gnawed at him. ^When I stand here taking every breath with you^ You're the only one who really knew me at all "You CAN'T go", He answered back in silent anger. "I won't allow it. How could you want to leave now?" Without Usagi he would have no one, no one to share his secrets with or to laugh with or smile with. Or even a reason to smile at all. "You have to choose, me or New York" She looked at him with tears in her eyes and slowly shook her head. "I choose New York", She said in a choked voice and walked out of the apartment closing the door silently behind her. ^How can you just walk away from me^ When all I can do is watch you leave Mamoru stood for a moment unable to move. At the same time angered and saddened at her choice. It hurt so much that she could just get up and abandon him when he needed her the most. Yet, why couldn't go after her? He had the chance right now but somehow his feet wouldn't move. ^Caused we shared the laughter...^ He thought of the many times they had called each other names and just ended up chuckling over it. ^And the pain...^ Mamoru saw Usagi telling him about her grandmother's recent death. He saw himself hold her tightly, comforting her. Most of all he remembered her sweet perfume drifted into his nose. ^And even shared the tears...^ Usagi had been the only person he had told about his parents death and the accident that caused him to lose his memory. That was the first time he had ever cried in front of anyone and Usagi had cried with him. ^You're the only one^ Who really knew me at all And then he remembered the look on her face as he told her to choose. ^So take a look at me now^ There's just an empty space Now he was here alone. Mamoru had lost the only girl he had ever WANTED to love. She was the price to be paid for his selfishness. Now he would lose her and when she left Usagi would take the only thing inside of him. His heart. ^There's nothing left here to remind me^ Just the memory of your face Laying on his bed he looked around his empty room and heard her laughter in the air, her scent in the breeze the came from his open window and when he closed his eyes he saw her sweet face. The warmth of her next to him as the slept was no longer around. ^Take a look at me now^ Cause there's just an empty space He needn't her. Just for a moment if that's all she'd give him he'd take it. Tears filled his eyes. ^And you coming back to me is against all odds^ And that's what I've got to face But she would never come back. And the tears began to fall. ^I wish I could just make you turn around^ Turn around and see me cry They had bumped into each other on the street and Mamoru watched as Usagi walked away from him. There eyes never met and he was somewhat thankful, he didn't want her to see the tears that had filled his eyes. It hurt to know she hated him. ^There's so much I need to say to you^ So many reasons why He wanted to talk to her and to call out her name. To hope that she would turn and on her face an enchanting smile. He had the words written in his mind but he couldn't do it. Not now, not anymore. ^You're the only one^ Who really knew me at all And once more he had let her go. ^So take a look at me now^ There's just an empty space That was the last time he had seen her. Mamoru saw her many times in his dreams and heard about her from Motoki. Her plans and the day she would be leaving. ^And there's nothing left here to remind me^ Just the memory of your face. Only a few blocks away in the Tsukino household Usagi stood packing. Rei, her best friend persuading her to stay a little longer, take a later flight. "No", She replied softly, her eyes glassy. "Too many memories" ^Take a look at me now^ Cause there's just an empty space Her heart was bare, without him there was no beat, no life that pulsated from what she use to call her heart. Her soul was gone, there was nothing left to do but to leave. ^But to wait for you^ Is all I can I do.. Mamoru knew that no matter what would happen, he would still be here. Always waiting for her to come back. ^And that's what I've got to face^ Driving to the airport he knew that to give her up was the stupid way out. He would not face the fact to losing her and if he had to move all the way to New York to be with her he would, if he could just catch up with her. ^Take a good look at me^ Cause I'll still be standing here... His mind came back to him as he watched the plane leave and his heart broke. But never would he stop loving her and when she'd come back he'd be standing there still. ^And you coming back to me is against all odds^ That's the chance I've got to take... "Mamo-chan?" He turned and there she was. In her hands two bags, she wore a long coat, skirt and boots that went up to her knees. Her hair was down, she was beautiful. And the most beautiful thing about her was the tears that dripped from her bright blue eyes. The look of love in them. "Usako?" He found his voice finally. She looked at him for a moment and began shaking her head as face crumbled in tears again. "I-I just couldn't leave-" Without another word she dropped her bags and ran into his arms. He held her tightly and there tears mingled as they kissed. "I'm so sorry Usako, I was afraid of losing you" Usagi held him even tighter. "Never...", She whispered. "Mamo-chan, come with me" He looked into her eyes and he knew what he wanted. "Won't your parents be mad?", He asked teasingly. "You're right. That is a problem", Usagi agreed. "I've got an idea", Mamoru said to her and took her hand. "I doubt if your parents would be mad if it was your HUSBAND you were going with" Usagi looked at him in shock for a moment until her face formed into a small smile. "Is that a marriage proposal?", She asked coyly. He took out a small velvet box and slipped the ring on her finger. "There's just one more problem" "What?" "Where will we find a priest that's awake at this hour?" There eyes met and he took her hand as they ran out of the airport, not knowing or caring what would happen. Or that Usagi had left her bags there. Nothing mattered to Mamoru but HER. ^Take a look at me now...^ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The version of this song I've heard was sung by Mariah Carey though it was from Mamoru's point of view. If you want listen to the Phil Collins version which is just as good. I hoped you liked it! Ja!
