Traders Etiquette
* There are 3 conditions of patches:
NEW:
Is new, never worn, not creased, no stitch holes, and the backing is perfect.  If a patch has ever been worn, it's not NEW.  There is no such thing as a "New, used" patch.
USED:  It's been worn, but it still looks great.  The colors aren't faded, the backing is still in place, there may be a crease, but nothing that can't be ironed out.  No tears or lost threads, stains or blemishes.  A used patch can have stitch holes around the edges, but it's still suitable for display.
RAGS: Rags can be almost "used", or they can be lousy enough to buff your car with.  They're soft and flimsy to hold.  The backing is falling apart if it's still there.  It's been through the wash so many times Gold is now Canary Yellow.  It's creased so bad a hydraulic press couldn't fix it and it's got a bloodstain from the burgular you chased and had to fight with.

BE HONEST ON CONDITION!!!!!!
If you don't specify before trading, trades should always be one new patch, for one new patch.  Don't EVER send a used patch in place of a new unless you agree on it before hand.  1 new for 2 used is common.  Don't EVER EVER EVER send rags unless that's what you expect in return.  Rags are really only acceptable when trading old, out of date patches.  Remember, there is nothing wrong with refusing a trade b/c you don't like the terms.  If you get something that you didn't agree on, spend the stamp and send it back.  The other half will get the message.

So who sends first?
If you initiate the trade you should send your patch first.  Plain and simple.  If you place an ad on a trade site you should get plenty of responses.  I generally don't initiate trades.  I've had alot of people do so and never send a patch, BUT I can happily say that I've never ever ever sent out a patch and been burned.

So how long is reasonable to wait before I send my return patch?
As long as it takes to get to the post office.  And it's always nice to advise the sender by email when you get their patch.  Post 9/11 mail can be funny.  I've had patches take 3 weeks to get to Canada, but only 5 days to get to Europe.

And of course, everybody likes a business card!!!!
