Love’s Departure

(Borrowed from John Donne)

My dear

It is not because I love you less

That I choose to leave

It is only that to love you more

Condemns me to such grief

And though your touch has known no ebb

And flesh to flesh still sweet

It cannot reconcile the void

Our history makes of each

For every lover’s best intention

Fate betrays the heart

And I, who am no exception

Am doomed to take my part

So still your sorrow until I am gone

And call my name no more

You cannot change what we have been

Nor what has gone before
