target audience:

this unit is intended for first grade students.

 

 

embedded problem:

 a significant number of children’s food choices do not follow a diet recommended by nutrition experts.  nutrition is critical for good health and habits need to be established at a young age.

 

 

problematic situation and role of student:

students will work to investigate the food groups so they may make an informed decision about healthy meals. students will be divided into five heterogeneous groups that i put them in. since first graders need a lot of structure, they will stay in these groups for the entire unit.

 

 

science standard

goal 23: understand human body systems and factors that influence growth and development.

b. explain the effects of health-related actions on the body systems.

●identify and classify foods that are healthy and unhealthy.

●recognize the basic food groups and food in each group.

 

 
language arts standard

goal 5: use the language arts to acquire, assess and communicate information

a. locate, organize, and use information from various sources to answer questions, solve problems and communicate ideas.

b. analyze and evaluate information acquired from various sources.

c. apply acquired information, concepts and ideas to communicate in a variety of formats.
