metacognitive reflection - blackline 7-5

planning

visualization - portfolios will be stored in hanging files in the space between the file cabinets and the bookshelves. this way, all students will be able to reach the portfolios and find their file independently. each student will have their own hanging file and folder with their name and number on it. in the front of the hanging file will be blank rubrics for the student to fill out before conferencing with me as well as the conference sign-up sheet. i think i will have to fill out the entry sheet as items are placed into the portfolio.

strategic planning - some of the items in the portfolio will be selected by myself, others by the student.  students will have some free choice and will be able to choose from many types of writing (poems, journals, narratives, etc…) together we will fill out a reflection sheet on what they chose. most of this will have to be done as a whole class rather than as they finish.

establish benchmarks - rubrics are in files with portfolios. i will have to show them examples of what is expected, as many have not used rubrics before.

monitoring

conferencing will take place as needed during the ilar block. most likely we will conference on days we do not do guided reading. conferencing with me may be a center they sign up to go to throughout the week.  i will not have a set time for conferencing, but will try to keep them about five minutes each.

once a quarter i will plan on having a portfolio conference in which we look over the work completed that quarter.

label & bridging - i like blackline 7.2 and as a whole class or in small groups we may try to answer these questions.

evaluating

in the beginning of the year, i plan to model most of the writing process and at that time will introduce how to use a rubric. we will also model self-evaluation and peer-evaluation. . anecdotes -  blacklines 7.2 and 7.4 really could be modified to work with first grade students!

 portfolio plan

i plan on using my portfolio primarily for writing.  this is certainly a work in progress, and other than the standards the portfolio will meet, i am sure the rest will change as time goes on!

learner standards

  1. use correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization and structure.

all entries will be tagged, some items must be included, and others will be selected through conferencing with classmates and myself. the tag will indicate what each entry signifies, and a self-reflection sheet will also be clipped to the piece. most likely i will write the reflection as a summary of the discussion with the students.

organization

portfolios will be stored in hanging files in the space between the file cabinets and the bookshelves. this way, all students will be able to reach the portfolios and find their file independently. each student will have their own hanging file and folder with their name and number on it. in the front of the hanging file will be blank rubrics for the student to fill out before conferencing with me as well as the conference sign-up sheet. i think i will have to fill out the entry sheet as items are placed into the portfolio.

around the room

i have a very print rich environment. the students can utilize the word wall and “outlaw words” as well as many posters with words and visual clues to assist them in writing.

security

i don’t think this will be an issue.

questions

i always have a lot of questions. i am wondering how the rubric will work out. i think they will need a lot of guided practice filling them and any self-assessment sheets out. however, i wonder if i should collect them as they finish, and then as a whole class go over the rubric together and them continue with the tagging process. this may end up being the most organized way for first graders.
