julie dunham- i plan on using my portfolio primarily for writing. this is certainly a work in progress, and other than the standards the portfolio will meet, i am sure the rest will change as time goes on!
state goal 3: write to communicate for a variety of purposes
learner standards
teacher planner
what to include:
monthly writing samples september “my family” october “halloween” november “giving thanks” december “holidays and lights” january “winter” february “love” march “animals” april “spring” may “plants”
expository writing “brush your teeth”
persuasive “lucky leprechaun”
narrative “wild things” “my reindeer” “in my garden”
creative writing samples/center writing book reports/ reviews
poems acrostic poems
journal entries
all entries will be tagged, some items must be included, and others will be selected through conferencing with classmates and myself. the tag will indicate what each entry signifies, and a self-reflection sheet will also be clipped to the piece. most likely i will write the reflection as a summary of the discussion with the students.
organization
portfolios will be stored in hanging files in the space between the file cabinets and the bookshelves. this way, all students will be able to reach the portfolios and find their file independently. each student will have their own hanging file and folder with their name and number on it. in the front of the hanging file will be blank rubrics for the student to fill out before conferencing with me as well as the conference sign-up sheet. i think i will have to fill out the entry sheet as items are placed into the portfolio.
conferencing will take place as needed during the ilar block. most likely we will conference on days we do not do guided reading. conferencing with me may be a center they sign up to go to throughout the week. i will not have a set time for conferencing, but will try to keep them about five minutes each.
around the room i have a very print rich environment. the students can utilize the word wall and “outlaw words” as well as many posters with words and visual clues to assist them in writing.
security i don’t think this will be an issue.
questions i always have a lot of questions. i am wondering how the rubric will work out. i think they will need a lot of guided practice filling them and any self-assessment sheets out. however, i wonder if i should collect them as they finish, and then as a whole class go over the rubric together and them continue with the tagging process. this may end up being the most organized way for first graders.
