ACCESS CODES FOR THE 4th EDITION

Access codes are only needed the first time you use the 4th Edition disc on a computer. After the initial use the computer
will access "People, Problems, and Power" without entering a code. If you install a new hard drive on your
computer, reformat your hard drive, or upgrade your operating system, you may be prompted to re-enter
the access code. Access codes are not case sensitive.

FIX FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP BUG

If you are using the 4th Edition with Windows XP, then the XP service pack MS06-051/KB917422 may be blocking "People, Problems, and Power" from running; it just silently exits.

We have analyzed KB917422 and found that the previously accepted programming practice now blocked - either by accident or by decision - poses no security threat and thus should be reenabled. Microsoft has shown understanding and is investigating a permanent solution. At this time, a permanent fix for KB917422 is scheduled to be included in the automatic XP update service in the near future. Until then, please use one of the fixes described below.

OPTION 1 - REMOVE THE UPDATE

A temporary solution is to uninstall the KB917422

1. Press Start / Settings / Control Panel
2. Press Add or Remove Programs
3. On XP, check the box "Show updates".
4. Select Security Update for Windows XP (KB917422)
5. Click Remove

Afterwards, the machine must be rebooted.

OPTION 2 - DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE PERMANENT FIX

Microsoft has now released a permanent fix for the problem, which can be downloaded here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?pocId=&freetext=924867&DisplayLang=en

Select an update based on the operating system your computer is using. Once installed, this fix (KB924867) will allow the book to be used normally, with no further updating.
