The above chart shows my dyno results on the Dynojet at Atlanta Chassis Dyno. These pulls, and 15 others, were made on August 15, 2000, in typical GA summer heat. The first few pulls, on the original Hypertech programming (custom programmed OBDII PCM), were dismal...timing was being pulled out at high rpm, for no apparent reason, and the curve had far too many peaks and valleys for Brad's taste. He optimized the fuel pressure, but it still wasn't putting out what he thought it should. Brad suggested swapping to an OBDI computer, and doing a custom program, so that is what we did. He smoothed out the curve considerably, as you can see, and found 12.2 horsepower over a program that should have been VERY close to begin with. The car runs much smoother now, doesn't set any codes, and pulls much harder than before. The peak numbers, 341.7hp and 321.7 lb/ft torque, were lower than I expected from this combo, but the heat (over 92 degrees on the last run, and very high humidity) and the number of pulls (17 total, over about 4 1/2 hrs) definitely contributed. Brad also suggested changing to a conventional cold air setup, due to the restrictiveness and heat sensitivity of the stock airbox (he feels 10rwhp would be the result). I'll test that theory on the dyno and the strip, since the ram effect doesn't help on a chassis dyno. My next dyno seesion will be in cooler weather, too, so the numbers should be a little higher. |

My first dragstrip runs were on August 17, 2000 at the Headhunter Motor Club in Eatonton, GA...my favorite 1/8th mile track. Its almost like legal street racing there! The temperature was in the 90s, and the humidity was very high. Combined with the 90 mile trip down there, the SS was hot...but under the circumstances, I think it did ok, especially considering the road race suspension on this car. Ironically, the first pass was my best...even though was "sleeping " on the line , and launched the car at idle!
RT 60' ET MPH 1.414 2.025 8.568 84.61 .727 2.130 8.799 81.84 (Hit rev limiter twice, low mph) .705 1.998 8.575 83.75
The above runs were made on ET Streets, with the stock front wheels and tires...my skinnies were at a friends house, and I couldn't get them in time. The first run was made with 15psi pressure; all others were at 10psi. Launch rpm varied from idle to 5000 rpm (last run). Traction was a real problem; the lowering springs and large sway bars didn't help. On my next trip, the front sway bar will be removed, the skinnies will be in place, and I'll hopefully get there sooner so I can cool the car down. I'm also thinking about putting different springs and struts on it soon, to give it better weight transfer...something that's nonexistant now! |
