Jennifer's memoir
"I'm so glad I got that over with", I thought to myself while getting off of the Q4. I was comming from Jamaica Avenue
and I sure was tired and sweaty. It was June 14, 1996 and I was going to graduate I.S.59 in just two days. I had a half a day that day, so my friend Victoria and I decided to look around on the "Ave" to see if I could find any graduation dresses. We didn't find anything I liked so we left. It was about 90 degrees
that day so I was really looking forward to going home so I could
take a nice cool shower and relax. Little did I know I would never see my home again.
When I was walking down my block I noticed something strange.
The whole block was cut off and there were about 4 police cars and 3 fire trucks. I thought "oh my god, what happened", I was
very worried that somebody's house caught on fire and someone got
killed. I proceeded to walk down the block and I asked one of the
police officers what was going on. He said that the second house on the right had caught on fire. The house the man was speaking
of was mine.
I began to run to what was left of my home. My aunt was there, crying intensively.
"What happened?" I asked her, while tears rolled down my face.
"I don't know, I just got here," she said.
I couldn't believe this was happenig to me. This kind of
thing happens to people on tv, not to me. Well, thats what I
thought anyway.
"How did this happen?" I asked one of the firemen.
"We don't know, but it might have been the cause of an electric association."
"Did you leave anything plugged in before you left the house?", my aunt asked in an annoyed vioce.
"No, I didn't."
I couldn't believe this was happening. One minute, I have
everything that I could ever want, next minute everything I own
is gone. Sounds like a movie, right? This story gets even better.
"Where is mommy?" I asked.
"Jenny, she has been in an accident."
Oh my god. I literally wanted to pass out. I felt my heart
drop down to my knees when my aunt said those words.
"What accident!" I screamed.
"She was at work when the fire started. When they told her that her house was on fire, she left immediatly. She was such in a rush to get home that she crashed into another car on the way."
At that time it was about 3:45 pm. My aunt and I rushed to the accident that my mother had been in. When I got there, from what I saw, I thought my mother had already died.
"AHHHHHHHH!!!!!" I began to cry so loud that everyone that
was there began to rush over to me.
"It'll be okay sweety", one of my mother's friend said.
" WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT WILL BE OKAY! IT'S NOT OKAY! MY MOTHER HAS BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT, MY HOUSE IS GONE! IT'S NOT OKAY!!!!!!"
"Come Jenny," my aunt then came over and put her arms around
me.
My eyes were as red as apples. My whole body was shaking. And throughout this whole time I was thinking, why me.
This tragic experience has taught me to appreciate everything that I have. Even though you may have the world today, it can be taken away from you just like that. We all must cherish what God gives to us because you never know when he will take it away.
