When I was a puerto Rican
When I Was Puerto Rican is what I'd have to call a very touching story. Esmerelda Santiago, better known as "Negi",
had a lot to accomplish in her life. Growing up with her 7 brothers and sisters, and her being the oldest, she was always
busy. I would say that she was emotionally abused due to the fact that her parents constantly argued, and her father was in and out her life.
"Negi" had a lot of experiences as a child, especially
sexual experiences. She was very curious about the
opposite sex, which is totally normal, but at one
point she took it too far. Like when the time a little
boy was masturbating in front of her. She could of
stopped it, but she didn't.
Comming to America was the most different experience that she has had. She had to learn a new language, and she had to deal with being teased because of the way she spoke. She also had to watch out for herself because the neighborhood she lived in was very bad. And dealing with her disfunctional family didn't make it any better.
Esmerelda Santiago's writing style I would have to say is good and bad. Good because she is very discriptive with her writing. She gives the reader a good perspective of what she is going through. But on the other hand, she sometimes gives details
about things that are unnecessary for the reader to know.
Her nickname "Negi" came fron Negro, which means black in spanish. Since she was the darkest from out of all her siblings,
they called her "Negi".
To me, it seems like this girl has had a lot of embarrasing
moments in her life. ( I can relate! )I think that Esmerelda and
I have a lot in common. I bet she's a Cancer! Anyway, in the end
she doesn't really give an idea of what she's doing now. It's like she wants the reader to keep guessing. Now that's what I call a writer!
