United Nations student Association meeting 10/08/03

General Meeting

October 8th, 2003

3:15 PM to 5:00 PM

 

 

3:15 PM:          Students were shown a movie entailing how to run and be part of a model UN Conference.

3:20 PM:          Introduction about the club; room number1225; Jason introduced the club to new comers, he spoke about issues we are going to be researching, announced the next meeting on 10/16/03 Thursday.

3:25 PM:          Meetings this semester will revolve around introduction to the UN.

-       Jason spoke about preparing for next semester.

-       Promised to guide people through all the obstacles.

-       Urged members to feel free to come to the club office with any questions.

-       Prof Arias introduced himself

-       Asked if there were any problems with event and the club as a whole.

 

3:30 PM:            Meeting on Thursday in room 3232 North Hall

UNA-USA- organization established by E. Roosevelt

-       UNSA members will be involved in the conference.

-       On Thursday members from the UNA-USA will speak about the conference.

-       High school conference At John Jay (go to web page) working on issue in college program, Public speaking course- earn college credit.

-       Great stepping platform.

 

3:35 PM:          – spoke about the NMUN conference in April

-       Discussed Pakistan as our top choice of countries to represent

-       Budget request was discussed

-       $75 for registration fee for the conference for each student, will be paid by the college.

-       only 18 people’s registration fees are paid by the college, the other will be raised by the club.

 

3:40 PM:          watched high school conference film

                        -film about what the NMUN provides for the student

                        - Model UN offers students to lobby for their chosen nation

                        - students can develop writing skills, public speaking, and people skills.

-       Negotiation skills can be acquired by participating in the Model UN.

 

 

3:50 PM:            Research and writing speeches were discussed.

-       Ideas about how to gain allies in the conference were shared

-       Important aspects such as interaction with others was recommended

-       Idea of formal and informal session were discussed.

 

4:05 PM:            Background of the three topics that are researched.

-       Countries are picked by members

-       The point is to get a country sitting on the security council

-       Team work is essential to the success of the group

-       One strategy is to play head games in the informal sessions.

-       We will know what country will be chosen for us by December

4:10 PM:            The class to be registered for is Government 430

 

4:15 PM:            Recognition

-       Volunteers to speak for one minute on following countries

 

4:20 PM:            Spoke about the next meeting and focus on High School conference

Next meeting in room 3232 next Thursday

 

4:55 PM:            Movie finished. Opened floor to question.

 

1)        What does it take to win the conference?

Chris answered: the 2002 conference was the first time John Jay won on an academic level. Dedication, learn knowledge public speaking.
